You might not be surprised that in the Chinese calendar, 2020 is the year of the rat. Los Angeles' Metalcore band has thus good reasons to name their new album. And you might also guess that their newest release is a very angry one. What else can you feel when our daily lives are constantly confronted with the causes of a global pandemic.
Anyways, here we are. Written reviews are back and the first one will hence be "Year of the Rat" by Matriarchs".

This is half an hour of sheer force. Matriarchs play a brutal mix of Metalcore and Beatdown Hardcore. The rough riffs are defined by plentyful variation in tempo and metre and of course, lots of breaks and beatdowns add to the brachial soundscape.
This is music for intense workouts, for getting rid of all your anger, and of course for intense moshpits. Matriarchs build up high tension and let it unload in powerful lightning bolts of force.

The music is both brutal and versatile. Intelligent songwriting is realized via highly distorted sounds and the feeling of a million shark knives hitting your body. Even though, I am not totally convinced by the musical output, I can appreciate the artistic work that has been done here. It just isn't my style, I'd say. Nevertheless, it kicks butts like crazy. Fans of bands like Emmure or Hatebreed will definitely enjoy this.
