Genre: Shadow Punk / Dark Garage Rock / Darker Post Punk
Origin: Leicester, England

The reactions go from "Ooohweeh!" to "Boop", and from "Hooray" to "Woop-de-Doop". Some might even go "Flip-a-dee-Flup-a-dee-Flop", and all of them are right. The source of this tremendous joy is the new single by Leicester's Garage and Post Punk trio 9 o'clock nasty. The new song goes by the name 'Darker Star' and although it is just a three-and-a-half-minute song, there is plenty to discover here. Thus, let us commence by taking a close listening to 'Darker Star':

Introduced by the sounds of crickets and an approaching thunderstorm, the song spreads electrifying thrill from its first second on. The stoic but heavy drum beat comes with an extra element that sounds like a tambourine or something similar. It leaves a certain Krautrock vibration - mesmerizing and activating.
The main riff is an extremely catchy Garage Rock'n'Roll an whatever theme that will nest in your inner ear once you have heard it for the first time. As a gorgeous feature that makes that riff's catchiness even more resilient, it is transferred to the bass line during the chorus - stunning! And speaking of the chorus, this is where the organ spreads some honest 60s Horror Film feels.
Last but not least there are the vocals, and if you know 9 o'clock nasty, then you know that the three musicians from Leicester know how to create an anthem. From the dynamic verses to the hymnic hookline, every part drags you into the dark sphere of this song, and thus you cannot not join in chanting "I was born under a darker star than you".
Have 9 o'clock nasty surpassed themselves once more? Indeed.

But what is it that we can learn from this smashing banger?
Well, there used to be psychologists like B. F. Skinner, Pavlov and more who called themselves Behaviorists. Their idea was that every human being is born with the same chances, the same aspirations, the same possibilities to become whatever they want: truck driver, smuggler, secretary, YouTuber. Unfortunately, this turned out to be wrong. Not all of us receive the same pair of shoes by the shoemaker called fate. Some get sneakers, others get sandals full of rocks and nails, others only get one stocking.
Another way to say this, is the approach made by 9 o'clock nasty. Their song 'Darker Star' uses the imagery of astrology. Thus, some are born under a wandering star and their legacy may live on forever, others are born under an average star and their lives may turn out pretty basic and okay, while others again are born under a darker star.
And thus, you can see 9 o'clock nasty dealing tarot cards in the music video. The final message which covibrates below the social criticism of 'Dark Star' is therefore: astrology and tarot are humbug.

Ooohweeeh!
