Apparently, it is time for another episode of "Learning German with MangoWave". Today's lesson is about time (not tense) and some Punk Rock vocabulary combined with regional studies and history of German Punk Rock.
ZeitKonsum (German: consumption of time) are a five-piece band from Oberhausen in the German Ruhr Area. The town is known for huge concerts, its post-industrial charme, and it is home to Lukas Kleineberg (bass), Jens Limpinsel (drums), Patrik Mierzwa (guitar), Nico "Simba" Meyer (guitar and backing vocals), and Matthias Kleineberg (vocals). The quintet has recently released their debut album "Zukunftsmusik" which can either mean "music from the future", or "pie in the sky" in a more figurative sense.

ZeitKonsum claim to be a band from the future bringing their music to our times. Reminds of the travels of Marty McFly and of the latest album by Vienna's Skate Punk band Rebell Bagatell. And if this thirteen-track album is a sneak peak of what to expect after the present will be over, then we can be glad: Punk Rock will prevail!

The music on "Zukunftsmusik" is influenced by half a decade of German and European Punk Rock. You can spot a lot of themes that relate to the more sophisticated school of so-called Deutschpunk. Thus, Dritte Wahl, Zaunpfahl, Los Borrachos, 2LHUD, Rakentenhund, or Kolporteure have very likely left their traces in the musicians' upbringing. And with 'Arte' (ARTE is a French-German TV station) ZeitKonsum have also added a Such A Surge-like Crossover song, while 'Gitarrenlehrling' ('Guitar apprentice') features a musical hommage to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
So, just a better cover band one might ask? Absolutely not, ZeitKonsum openly and honestly present where they come from, and yet their music is autochthonous and adds contemporary and progressive elements to the same old sameold.

One great feature on "Zukunftsmusik" is the sarcastic tone of the lyrics. Ironically, Punk Rock band ZeitKonsum takes on their own subculture and themselves. And yet, they are serious about what they say. The band opposes sexism ('Voyeur'), and wants to help stoners get out of their every-day swamp ('Zeit wie Gras').
Summing up, ZeitKonsum's "Zukunftsmusik" is definitely fun to listen to. The wheel of Punk Rock has by far not been reinvented here. Still, the band shows that they have a lot of potential, their heart is in the right place, and I can imagine their concerts to be great parties. The album's closing ballad 'Punk ist der Beweis' ('Punk is proof') would make an awesome encore.

Music from every post will stay in the MangoRotation playlist for 14 days.
