Gatsby - Seasonal Changes in a Mundane World (MR)
(34:22, Album, Digital, Journeyman Records, 21/01/2022)
More than twenty years ago - about three months before Y2K - Kevin from Scotland met Jesper, Kim, and Pelle at an Irish pub in Denmark. This is not the beginning of a joke, but the foundation to a some great music. In January 2022, the quartet has released their third longplayer "Seasonal Changes in a Mundane World" which is crammed with confidence and honest emotions. Gatsby present a colourful mix of 60s-style psychedelia, fuzz-laden 70s Rock, and the dreamy, atmospheric synthesizer sound of the 1980s: various as life itself and full of passion.
Brett Copeland - Cure for me (MR)
(03:10, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 04/02/2022)
Anxiety can be horrible as it captivates psyche and body. Brett Copeland from Los Angeles, CA has used the image of a tooth broken by furious grinding as a very personal symbol for this. With fear being an omnipresent companion in the news, in the media, and all around us, our minds and bodies lose the ties to their natural, calming grounding. By the power of massive Alternative Rock, the Californian artist has created a banging anthem for everyone who seeks to weaken the overwhelming force of anxiety. Here is to surviving, here is to the 'Cure for me'!
Sabertooth Swing - Delta Bound (MR)
(63:47, Album, CD/Digital, Slammin' Media/Fairground Records, 18/03/2022)
Sabertooth Swing from New Orleans, LA have provided a very special and multidimensional lesson in American history for us. For more than one hour, the Louisianan band concerns the darkest chapters that life has written in the Americas since the day European explorers and settlers have set foot on the continents. It is a collection of stories about the merciless wars that white people brought to the indigenous population of the Americas, about the extinction and the genocidal conquest undertaken by those who colonized the West. But it is also the story about the birth of a new hybrid culture, a melting pot if you will, in which cultural features from Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia have come together. And thus, this album is a beautiful musical mix of Jazz and Swing with Spoken Word, Americana, and Blues. Embracing the cultural heritage of the Mississippi Delta, Sabertooth Swing present a holistic image of Modern American History - and thereby have created an overwhelmingly great album.
Helena May - Funkalicious (MR)
(38:38, Album, Vinyl/CD/Digital, Sheep Hill Records, 19/11/2021)
Based partially surrounded by the gorgeous panorama of the Austrian Alps and partially amidst the vibrant metropolitan life of London, Helena May has created eleven hymnic tracks, each of them inspired by real stories and happenings, and put them together on the album "Funkalicious". Working together with talented artists from both Austria and the United Kingdom, Helena May produces amazing soundscapes for the soul, for the dancefloor, for romantic moments, or for happy solitude. Upbeat Disco Funk, passionate Soul, and dynamically grooving Indie Pop alloy a tasty cocktail full of colours and movement for your body and mind. The album's climax is the title track that is defined by an articstically chequered structure interchanging between sensual passages, massively grooving parts for the dancefloor, and an anthemic chorus - "Funkalicious" is a fantastic album for the whole body and all parts of the soul.
Pennan Brae - Zulu (MR)
(05:02, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 11/03/2022)
In November 2021, Pennan Brae from Vancouver, B.C. releasd their tenth album "Planted" which was the first part of their "Garden Series". By the end of the first half of 2022, this series will be completed by its second part "Picked" of which the single on hand, 'Zulu' is the first release. This energetic hymn is driven by a sweet Rhythm and Blues guitar that joyfully surfs, exults, and races over a dynamic Indie Rock beat. Completed by soft vocals and catchy riffs, 'Zulu' becomes a track bringing joy and fond of dancing to you all day (and night).
Jesse Grossi - Outcast (MR)
(03:24, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 04/03/2022)
Like Pennan Brae from British Columbia, Jesse Grossi from Los Angeles, CA has become a regular guest on MangoWave. The latest banger by Jesse Grossi 'Outcast' is an anthem embracing being different, creating one's own identity, and proudly exiting the everlasting cycle of everyday life. This moving hymn for the misfits and the outcasts is presented via a sensual Indie Rock guitar, the unique and thrilling vocals by Jesse Grossi, and a dominant bass line that is about to move your whole body. And the message for the outcasts hearing this: there is nothing wrong with you.
Johnny & The Brewsers - Tell Us / Dark Red Dice (MR)
(08:11, Single, Digital, Brewser Ball, 18/02/2022)
Dublin's Johnny Brewer presents two brand new tracks on the latest single "Tell Us / Dark Red Dice". The first track is introduced by a massively heavy Hard Rock riff that reminds of Glenn Danzig's solo works but then mutates into a powerful steam roller driven by a dominant Blues bass and sleazy Heavy Rock which climaxes in a thunderstorm of a guitar solo. The second track 'Dark Red Dice' is made from burning hot Desert Rock and Rock'n'Roll - the ideal soundtrack for a long ride.
Aza Brown - For real? (MR)
(03:37, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 04/03/2022)
Looking at how consumerism, capitalism, the everlasting rotation of the hamster wheel, and other phenomena of this rat race affect our lives, Aza Brown from English town Chesterfield has a question for all of us: "Are you for real?". Dynamic and catchy Alternative Rock that comes with a powerful Big Band-like horn section, Aza Brown promotes exiting this grey and hostile environment and starting enjoy the beauty of life instead.
Not Now Norman - Save Me (MR)
(04:07, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 25/02/2022)
Not only are Not Now Norman another regularly featured artist on MangoWave. The band from Berwick upon Tweed in the English county of Northumberland is also one of the most underrated representatives of the Grunge revival. And the band really deserves a lot more attention out there as the new single 'Save Me' easily proves. Gloomy melancholia made from Alternative Rock and Grunge grinds on the spiky edges of crunchy Heavy Metal riffs while dark harmonies merge with heavy rhythms, and the stunning vocals enchant the listeners' senses.
Bosola - Ophelia Headstrong (MR)
(03:37, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 14/03/2022)
And speaking style revivals, here is another amazing band you should check out. Trio Bosola from Newcastle upon Tyne bring us dreamy 80s and 90s Alternative Rock sounds with some traces of Shoegaze. Their single 'Ophelia Headstrong' is the bitter dialogue between support and empowerment on the one hand, and envy and misogyny on the other. It is a celebration for non-male people who are strong willed enough to fight patriarch structures, and yet a reminder that misogyny and sexism are still major issues we have to combat.
