"ROGO" is the sophomore full-length release by Ralph Ralph (guitars and vocals), Daniel W (bass), and Mat Dumil (drums). Together, the trio from Germany are Trigger Cut whose first release "Buster" got published in May 2019 and was highly praised by the music press. Twenty-months after the release of their debut, and twelve months after the first lockdown in Germany, Mat, Daniel, and Ralph have returned with their ten-track sophomore album "ROGO".
The video above shows the regular cover artwork of CD and vinyl record editions while in the header of the article you can see the deluxe edition's cover. Both vinyl versions have a square cut-out in the centre, so the album title "ROGO" is on a different layer than the sleeve since the title is printed onto the inlay. This makes the haptic experience very interesting and leaves the first positive impressions even before the vinyl disc is spinning on the turntables.
Music-wise, Trigger Cut provide their audience with a genius and dynamic recipe with Math Rock, Noise, and Post Punk being the main ingredients. Drummer Mat is a beast of a heavyweight clockwork building up massive layers and carpets of intelligent rhythmics, smashing attacks, and stinging little decorations. This rough foundation made from shufted beats and straightforward assaults is the playground for Daniels dominant bass. Sonorous layers of thick sound and crashingly fuzzy leads mark the perfect line between rhythm and melody, between Noise and Post Punk. The powerful bass hence leaves plenty of artistic liberty to the guitar played by Ralph whose stinging and pinching sonic highlights complete the soundscape without abandoning its base.
The vocals dive through this stunning musical trope like a dolphin in the open ocean. Between dashing deep screams and shouts, melancholic chants, and insane yelling, vocalist Ralph always manages to keep the golden ratio between melody and harmony on the one hand and violent utterings on the other.
And thus, Trigger Cut's "ROGO" is a shiny gem for everyone who loves versatile, emotional, and loud music. Between melancholy and nihilism, between 9 o'clock nasty, Totally Unicorn, and Isoscope, Trigger Cut have created a beautiful and noisy playground.
