Picture Credit: Bretus   Bretus - Bretus Release Date: December 12, 2010, Re-Issue: November 11, 2020 Label: Fuzzy Cracklins / The Swamp Records Format: CD / Digital Length: 26:15 Genre: Horror Doom Origin: Catanzaro , Italy Bretus' selftitled Mini CD was originally released in 2010. In 2014 actually, the first re-issue was produced. Now in 2020, we celebrate the tenteh anniversary of the Horror Doom debut from Italy. And it is another premiere, too. The re-release of "Bretus" is the first re-issue ever done by the label The Swamp Records. On five tracks Bretus play heavy Doom Metal driven by a sludgy psychedelic atmosphere. The second element defining the sound on this Mini CD is horror. You can hear in the opening track 'Sitting on the Grave' (video above). Bretus work with the tradition of bands like Samhain, The Other or Rezurex. Horror stories are the motor for both, the lyrics and the musical style. Doom Metal-wise, Bretus are rather traditional. Their soun...

Single Review: Promises Promises - About the Heart (2020)

Picture Credit: Promises Promises Promises Promises   - About the Heart Release Date: November 14, 2020 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 04:10 Genre: Americana / Pop Punk Origin: Dumfries , Scotland Scotland's Promises Promises are back with a new Single. After inviting us to" Medication Mondays " and telling us about "A little Boy's Lifetime", the most recent Single is called " About the Heart ". And yes, it is very soulful. Smooth Americana sound goes hand in hand with melodic Pop Punk motion. And wait for that saxophone to play. That is my favourite part of the song. Personally, it does not completely catch me. I appreciate the harmony and the positive vibrations the song spreads. I honestly think that Promises Promises should be played on big radio stations. Altogether it's a really cool song although it won't become one of my favourites. Promises Promises Online: Facebook Instagram Bandcamp SoundCloud YouTube Spotify Looking...

Album Review: Balothizer - Cretan Smash (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Balothizer Atwork: Zara der Arakelian Balothizer - Cretan Smash Release Date: November 13, 2020 Label: Louvana Records Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 37:05 Genre: Psychedelic Rock / Punk Rock / Folk Origin: London , England Balothizer play Post-Cretan music. That means they use traditional music from the Greek island Crete and re-interprete it in modern ways. The rendition is made both musical and content-wise. Best example for this is the song 'Aleppo' which contains the lyrics from Cretan folk song 'Χαλέπιανος Μάνες'. It merges the combined sounds of Mediterranean and Arab music, and is now re-interpreted via Psychedelic Punk. Got an impression? That's what Balothizer call "Cretan Smash". "Cretan Smash" is the sophomore album by Balothizer. The trio uses the traditional sounds of Crete for their main themes and makes them merge with hypnotizing Psychedelic Rock. Furthermore, the savage energy of 1980s Punk Rock is added which...

Album Review: After Smoke Clears - Edification (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: After Smoke Clears After Smoke Clears - Edification Release Date: November 12, 2020 Label: selfrelease Format: CD / Digital Length: 41:27 Genre: Modern Metal / Groove Metal Origin: London , England What is there to be expected after the smoke clears? Silent void? Rubble and debris? Or maybe edificiation? Well, probably this review will not provide us with an answer. But nevertheless, the debut album by London's After Smoke Clears is called "Edification" and thus let us be hopeful and enjoy some brachial sound. My first impression of the album is a very positive surprise. Reason is, there is one thing I often miss in Modern Metal releases. Groove. It appears to me that Modern Metal bands often put a lot of effort in creating dystopian soundscapes and finding the right relation between Industrial and Hardcore. But fortunately that is not the case with After Smoke Clears. The quartet from England does not forget to groove. They even groove a lot. Huge groo...

Album Review: Six Days of Calm - The Ocean's Lullaby (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Six Days of Calm Artwork: Oli Hummel Six Days of Calm - The Ocean's Lullaby Release Date: November 06, 2020 Label: Midsummer Records / Cargo Records Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 51:41 Genre: Cinematic Post Rock Origin: Würzburg , Germany There once was a Metalcore band called Watch Them Fade . The group from my hometown Würzburg disbanded in 2018 and their bass player and songwriter Marc Fischer  decided on going after his passion Post Rock. And those who knew their music will know that in the later phase Watch Them Fade have played a very atmospheric version of Metalcore. Therefore, Fischer s transition was not as big as it may sound in the first place. Hence, Six Days of Calm was born. The one-person band from Lower Franconia that is very likely to become a new star in the tranquil univerese of melancholic instrumental music. "The Ocean's Lullaby"is aseven-track release defined by spheric sounds and the soulful musical rendering of moods, feeli...

Picture Credit: Acid Mess Artwork:  Héctor Castañón - Ossobüko Acid Mess - Sangre de otros mundos Release Date: November 06, 2020 Label: Spinda Records Format: Vinyl / Cassette / CD / Digital Length: 48:06 Genre: Psychedelic Rock / Psychedelic Prog Origin: Oviedo (Uviéu) , Spain "Sangre de otros mundos" means "Blood from other worlds". I cannot tell for sure if this is Castellano or Asturianu. From my restricted Central European perspective it is nevertheless one of the languages spoken in Spain. Anyways, "Sangre de otros mundos" is the third album by Acid Mess from Oviedo (or Uviéu or Asturianu) in the North Spanish region of Asturia. The album is available via Andalusian label Spinda Records. And here you should press play on the video below and take some notes. Both, the band Acid Mess, and the label Spinda Records are worth keeping in mind. Acid Mess play stunning 70s style (Neo-) Psychedelic Rock with a strong Prog Rock impact and some very uniquie...
