And her weapon of choice in the fight with social injustice is dramatic pop music. What might at first seem as your typical MTV American dream band has actually outgrown that demanding status, finding a firmer foothold in the area of social activism and genuine 90’s sound. As years passed, CHLSYs songwriting skill and video production quality both improved noticeably. Behind the songs stands the mastermind of Chelsea Gilliland, the young prodigy who does both singing and playing the guita...

Image
Picture Credit: Hotel California   Hotel California - Orange Release Date: June 04, 2021 Label: Timezone Records Format: CD / Digital Length: 35:45 Genre: Americana / Folk Origin: Hamburg , Germany In the new millenium's first decade, Daniel Bewernick-Green  toured the United States and Europe together with Carl Albrecht . It took until 2009 until the first album by Hotel California "The New Sound of Folk" was released. And the approach by which Hotel California rethink Folk and Americana is indeed a fresh and uncommon one, as we can still hear a dozen years later on the latest release "Orange". The creatuve process in which the album was born can be located between lockdowns and constant uncertainty about the future - it was the beginning of the coronacene. Thus, Hotel California have put a COVID track on "Orange"; but it is not a song about life with the virus, or about the new reality that was brought to us by the virus. On the contrary, it is a so...

Picture Credit: Presley Duyck   Presley Duyck - Juliet Release Date: September 24, 2021 Length: 03:36 Genre: Indie Folk Origin:  Dallas ,  TX ,  USA What is your first association with the name Juliet ? Probably, a vastt majority of people socialized in Europe or North America will refer to the narrative of Juliet Capulet  and Romeo Montague , once written by William Shakespeare . The number of arts that was inspired by this drama is uncountable. Yet, there are great works that deserve special attention, and thus, here is 'Juliet', the latest single by Dallas' Presley Duyck . Inspired by the old tale, Duyck  wrote this song that is based on the original but contains unexpected twists which make 'Juliet' so exciting. Music-wise, 'Juliet' is a very warm and atmospheric Indie Folk anthem driven by a highly dynamic acoustic guitar and passionate Americana moods. The soundscapes beautifully musick Juliet 's longing for her beloved Romeo , and on top, it is th...

Single Review: Sisyphes - Des stops et des détours (2021)

Picture Credit: Sisyphes   Sisyphes - Des stops et des détours Release Date: September 24, 2021 Length: 03:21 Genre: Indie Folk / Dream Pop Origin: Margate , England Geoffrey Papin  is a musician based in Kentish town Margate, also home to Broken Folk duo Lunatraktors . Papin , who used to create music with LaHoule , has recently formed his new solo band Sisyphes, and will very soon release an EP and an album. The single 'Des stops et des détours' is a beautiful composition of melancholy, desire, and hope. As the title tells us, it is about un unsteady but ongoing path defined by stops and detours - such as life is. A folky melody greets the listeners on top of a shoegaze-like Synthwave carpet. With his soothing vocals and the harmonic interaction of the instruments, Sisyphes creates a soundscape that resembles the first lights of dawn. It is a very comfortable and appeasing atmosphere that is spread here and which finds its climax in the colourful vocal bridge. Hence, ...

And now it is here, the latest album by the English Folk, Rock, and Indie artist; a ten-song compilation of songs that connect traditional and contemporary music, old tales and reflections about nowadays' society. And thus, "Hope in a Jar" is an album that drips with love, desire, passion, reflection, and a wholesome perspective on past, present and future combined. If you have not heard any music by Flaming June, I recommend to also listen to previously released EP " The Firework's  Daughter " which features the stunning song 'The Wo...

Single Review: Flaming June - In the Dark there's Gold (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Regine Ray Photography   Flaming June - In the Dark there's Gold Release Date: October 01, 2021 Length: 02:49 Genre:  Indie Folk Origin:  N ewmarket ,  England Only two more days until Flaming June's album "Hope in a Jar" will be released. Time enough to take a look at the latest ex ante single 'In the Dark there's Gold' by the English Folk artist. So, let us enjoy the final preview onto an album I cannot wait to be released. Compared to previous singles ' The Ballad of Daniel Dawson ' or ' Paralyze me where I stand ', is a true calm anchor. On a soft and soothing piano foundation, Flaming June presents a deeply soulful and heartwarming sound. The unmistakable voice of Louise Eaton  appears both, solid and fragile on this extraordinary Flaming June song. And it is this counterpart to the dynamic tempi of the previous singles that makes 'In the Dark there's Gold' raise the anticipation for "Hope in a Jar...

News: Molosser - Ellesmere Island (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Molosser     Molosser - Ellesmere Island Release Date: September 03, 2021 Length: 03:38 Genre:  Folk Rock Origin:  Uråsa ,  Sweden Uråsa's Folk Rock duo Tess  and Jahn , also known as Molosser, will probably not need any further introduction since they have appeared on MangoWave quite frequently, as you can see by clicking here . If you want to know more about the two artists from Sweden, the review of their album "Appear" might be the best way to learn about them. The single on hand was originally featured on that very album as well - a full-length release consisting of nine A-Sides as it was called. On 'Ellesmere Island', Molosser take us to a cold, cold place: Canada's northernmost island Ellesmere - also known as Umingmak Nuna in the Inuktitut language. With guitars tuned so low they could salvage ship wrecks from the Arctic Sea, and percussions as soft as the noises of steps through thick snow, Molosser musick the atmosphere of the spa...

Single Review: The Midnight River Crew - The Girl who knew too much (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Karen Glykys   The Midnight River Crew - The Girl who knew too much Release Date: July 30, 2021 Length: 08:59 Genre: Indie Folk / Art Pop Origin: London , England The Midnight River Crew is the brainchild by London's multiinstrumentalist Mark Johnson . The band's latest single release features two tracks of which you might actually know one if you have followed The Midnight River Crew already. The single's B-Side 'The Girl without a Voice', sung by Sharon Mari  was also featured on the 2020 album " Scirocco ". The Girl Who Knew Too Much by The Midnight River Crew The A-Side 'The Girl who knew too much' is just as easy-going and artistic as the B-Side. Nevertheless, the Art Pop presented here by The Midnight River Crew comes with more versatility in its souundscape. The violin played by Judith Hillier  adds a gorgeous Folk atmosphere to the song, while the piano and the vocals by Isabella Coulstock  enchant the audience's senses...

News: Molosser - Back in Black (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Molosser / Evil Ear   Molosser - Back in Black (AC/DC Cover) Release Date: September 17, 2021 Length: 03:38 Genre:  Folk Rock Origin:  Uråsa ,  Sweden Swedish duo Molosser has become a frequently featured band on MangoWave. You will find previous articles and reviews on the music by Tess  and Jahn   here . Their newest output is something I would not have expected. The bigger is the surprise. 'Back in Black', originally written and performed by a band from Australia that I find extremely overrated, is the latest video release by Molosser, and actually it has become pretty cool! Although the cover version does not feature too many of the thrilling dark harmonies that make Molosser's original songs so exciting, the duo has hereby created a cool camp fire version of the rock classic. Whether AC/DC fans will like it as much as I do, I cannot tell. Content from the  MangoNews  will always stay in the  MangoRotation  playlist f...

News: Flaming June - Paralyse me where I stand (2021)

Picture Credit: Regine Ray Photography   Flaming June - Paralyse me where I stand Release Date: August 12, 2021 Length: 02:53 Genre:  Folk Rock  /  Indie Folk Origin:  Cambridge ,  England Lousie Eatock , also known as Flaming June, might be one of the greatest musical discoveries that I made this year. The previous single 'The Ballad of Daniel Dawson' completely blew my mind ( read the review here ), and ' The Firework Maker's Daughter ' is on hot rotation whenever I work at the hostel. Some weeks ago, Flaming June released a new single, 'Paralyse me where I stand', which will be featured on the upcoming album " Hope in a Jar " together with 'The Ballad of Daniel Dawson' and eight other tracks. You can already pre-order the CD, and here is another good reason why to do so: Dark harmonies and a melancholic theme open the song, and in its beginning it partially reminds of the stunning duo Molosser . With the dynamic chorus, Flaming June adds...
