Single Review: Bison Face - Private Joke Party (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Ernie Hill   Bison Face - Private Joke Party Release Date: July 30, 2021 Length: 03:31 Genre: Alternative Rock / Grunge Origin: St. Albans , England The Grunge-Revival predominantly has two faces, and I love both of them. On the one hand, there is the mix of Punk and Grunge by amazing acts like Hands off Gretel , Passionless Pointless , or 24/7 Diva Heaven . And on the other hand, there are bands who revive the soulful and melancholic Alternative Rock that (more or less) followed Grunge. Two protagonists of the latter are Congoroo and Bison Face. On 'Private Joke Party' Hertfordshire's Bison Face take their audience to a dark but comfortable space where the drinks are cold and the music is loud. A massively rolling riff and anthemic choruses move across the heavyweight rhythms until they collapse into an even heavier instrumental part. If your 90s heroes were Smashing Pumpkins and Alice in Chains, you will adore Bison Face. Music from every post will stay

Picture Credit: Salsola   Salsola - The Seekers Release Date: August 06, 2021 Length: 04:24 Genre: Indie Rock / Jangle Pop Origin: Stockton-on-Tees , England Salsola's last single release ' Deconstruction ' is quite some time ago. It was actually released in the pre-coronacene! But now the quartet from North East England is back with another tidbit. After several livestreams and the insane reality of the lockdowns, Salsola rise up like a phoenix and present their newest recording 'The Seekers'. Salsola · The Seekers Smooth and gentle, the psychedelic Indie Pop sounds create a beautiful sonic environment for the dreamers, the lovers, and, of course, 'The Seekers'. Salsola present themselves very soulful and emotional on their new track, and thus enchant their audience by creating an atmosphere that makes you wanna light a candle and pour a glass of dry red wine. Single Review: The Canvas Collective - Say something (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Mia Shamriahu   The Canvas Collective - Say something Release Date: August 06, 2021 Length: 02:58 Genre: Indie Rock Origin: New York, NY, USA Last year, Mandy , Kris , and  Zack , also known as The Canvas Collective released their EP " Silenece wants me but I don't wanna be silent ". Somewhere between Alternative Rock and Alt Country, the trio presented hymns for gender equality, for positivity of mind, body, and self, and about the fight against sexism, homophobia, transphobia. A year later, The Canvas Collective are back with the same energy and with a new sound. Here is 'Say something': The Canvas Collective · Say Something As they said on their latest EP, The Canvas Collective are ' not giving in ', and thus continue their battle against inequality and injustice. The weapons have changed though. The massive Alternative Rock influence has mostly vanished - instead, super fast, boppy, dancefloor-ready, and funky Indie Pop invites us to

Single Review: Love Ghost - Wolfsbane (2021)

Picture Credit: Taylor Lamb   Love Ghost - Wolfsbane Release Date: July 16, 2021 Length: 02:59 Genre: Alternative Metal / Industrial Metal Origin:  Los Angeles ,  CA ,  USA LA's Love Ghost are a quintet that  masterfully reinterprets soulful and harsh sounds. Predominantly, you can categorize their music under labels such as Alternative Rock, or Alternative Metal, but also terms such as Nu Metal, or Industrial can apply to the reflected, emotional, and powerful sounds created by the Californian band. In their song 'Wolfsbane', Love Ghost provide us with an empowering message to never stop being ourselves. No matter who is trying to take you down, you shall nor forget that you are beautiful, and you are awesome! What begins with a gloomy Alternative Rock intro, quickly becomes a raging and self-empowering Nu Metal and Industrial passage that says 'Here I am, you can't bring me down!'. In thesecond verse, Love Ghost receive support by skilled rapper Rico Nasty wh

Single Review: MIHI NIHIL - Ticking Clocks (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Jenny Hipp Spencer   MIHI NIHIL - Ticking Clocks Release Date: July 29, 2021 Length: 04:32 Genre: Indie Rock / Shoegaze Origin: Los Angeles , CA , USA After two appearances in the Discoveries of the Week in October and December of 2020, LA's MIHI NIHIL now receive their first own article on MangoWave. In April 2021, the Californian quartet released their selftitled debut album which once more proved how versatile the band is. With sounds that reach from Punk to Post Punk, and from Indie and Shoegaze to Art Rock, MIHI NIHIL easily merge and combine genres. The latest single from the album is the dreamy anthem 'Ticking Clocks': This song about time spreads a thick and cool mist made from Shoegaze, Post Punk and melancholia. Despite the foggy atmosphere, MIHI NIHIL add steady movement to the song - time never stands still. 'Ticking Clocks' is a great tune to reflect to, a good song for ordering the last round, or for getting out of bed. Music from e

Single Review: Avresa - Are you happy? (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Avresa   Avresa - Are you happy? Release Date: July 25, 2021 Length: 03:06 Genre: Post Punk / Indie Rock Origin: Sydney , Australia If you have heard the word "Avresa" before, here are the two most likely chances why: 1) you speak Swedish ("avresa" means "departure"), or 2) you have already listened to previous songs by Sydney's Jeremy Binger  who started working as a solo artist after departing from his band. With Avresa, Jeremy Binger  explores new musical territories and progresses via collaborating with plenty of other musicians. Here is single release number four from Avresa's sonic journey: the short and honest question 'Are you happy?': Energetic Indie Rock combined with melancholic Post Punk concern the weird reality that is displayed via social media. Somewhere between filters, effects, poses, distance, and omissions, there are people. Are they happy? Can we tell? Jeremy Binger 's take on social media is a beau

Album Review: Guest of Rapture - EGoR6: Scream (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Guest of Rapture   Guest of Rapture - EGoR6: Scream Release Date: August 03, 2021 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 51:52 Genre: Dubstep / Horror / Metalcore Origin:  Los Angeles ,  CA ,  USA Measured by how rarely the genres EDM and Dubstep are featured on MangoWave, you can assume that only certain pearls and special works manage to convince me. One of those exceptional pieces is "Scream", the sixth part of Guest of Rapture's "EGoR" series. The artist from LA provides us with genre-merging innovative energy, a pitch-black horror story, and sonic narrative techniques that are absolutely unique. Guest of Rapture · Terrified (sOuNdS) "Scream" is a fifty-minute journey through the darkest and most horrifying chasms of our reality. Blood, gore, murder, violence, damnation, and fear spat out straight from infernal depths are bound in sound and noise. Mastermind Tom Berry  uses samples from horror movies, and creates a violent so

Album Review: Moon Walker - Truth to Power (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Moon Walker   Moon Walker - Truth to Power Release Date: September 24, 2021 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 26:45 Genre:  Alternative Rock  /  Indie Rock Origin:  Los Angeles ,  CA ,  USA LA's Moon Walker were recently called this year's most underrated band, and I really hope that this will change, now that Harry  and Sean  have released their debut album "Truth to Power". There are at least seven reasons why Moon Walker deserve to skyrocket the Indie charts - the album's seven tracks. Seriously, in the review of their single 'Disturbed Suburbia' , I have called the duo a hit machine, and I can only repeat myself. Moon Walker are one of those bands that create instant classics with every song they write - maybe comparable to Swiss Rockabilly heroes The Peacocks, but serving a different genre. Although the Indie and Alternative Rock played by Moon Walker is very colourful, boppy, sort of psychedelic, and dynamically funky, the se

News: Mothman and The Thunderbirds - 96 Quite Bitter Beings (2021)

Picture Credit: Drahma R.   Mothman and The Thunderbirds - 96 Quite Bitter Beings (CKY Cover) Release Date: September 28, 2021 Length: 03:21 Genre: Stoner Metal / Stoner Punk Origin: Philadelphia , PA , USA CKY's '96 Quite Bitter Beings' might be one of the most famous songs in the world of skateboarding. The Alternative Metal and Skate Punk hymn was featured on Jackass and the legendary third part of THPS series. If you watched MTV in the late 90s and the early post-Millenium years or if you had at least one friend wearing baggy pants and trucker caps, you will know this anthem. 96 Quite Bitter Beings (Single) by Mothman and The Thunderbirds Philadelphia's Mothman Alex Parkinson  has wanted to record a cover version of CKY's hit for a long time, and now it is here. With help from Egor Lappo  who was responsible for production, mix and master, this plan has now been realized. In the beginning, the Mothman and The Thunderbirds version of "96 Quite Bitter Beings

Album Review: The Consecutives - The Consecutives, Vol. 2 (2021)

Picture Credit: The Consecutives   The Consecutives - The Consecutives, Vol. 2 Release Date: May 04, 2021 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 30:16 Genre: Funk / Jazz Origin: Brooklyn , NY , USA Eighteen months after the release of their debut album " The Consecutives, Vol. 1 ", the quartet from Brooklyn, New York is back with the successor "The Consecutives, Vol. 2". Ray Cetta  has taken the position of the bass player from Dave Hassel  while the rest of the line-up has remained the same. That means, Ray  has recorded these songs together with guitarist Andy Berman , keyboarder Tom Wilson , and drummer and songwriter Dan Klug . In October 2020, the four artists went to Flux Magnetic Studios in New York for a four-hour session of rehearsals and recording. The result is a half-hour Jazz Funk orgy consisting of four first-take recordings. What we can hear on "The Consecutives, Vol. 2" is master-class Modern Funk. Drummer Dan Klug  shows that he is u

Album Review: Angry Joe and the Holy Socks - Kicking Rocks (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Anh Phan   Angry Joe and the Holy Socks - Kicking Rocks Release Date: July 30, 2021 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 38:45 Genre: Alternative Rock Origin: Houston , TX , USA The band name Angry Joe and the Holy Socks might raise the assumptions that this young band from Houston, Texas plays pissed-off and raging Hardcore Punk. Instead, "Kicking Rocks" is a soulful, autochthonous, and yet dynamic and honest Alternative Rock release. The band with the long and awesome name consists of Charli  (violin, viola, bass, drums, guitar, backing vocals), and Joe  (guitar, bass, percussions, vocals). Their first album is a product of quarantine, during which the two band members decided to write and record songs that everyone can refer to. The result is an eleven-track work containing songs about life, drugs, love, emotions, the status quo of our society, and the sober statement that we are all human, and we all have the same feelings. Predominantly, "Kicki

Album Review: Absolutely Free - Aftertouch (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Matt King   Absolutely Free - Aftertouch Release Date: September 24, 2021 Label: Boiled Records Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 40:46 Genre: Shoegaze / Krautrock Origin: Toronto , Ontario , Canada Absolutely Free's latest album "Aftertouch" is a beautiful example for the vast versatility of the Krautrock genre. Although the soundscapes of "Aftertouch" somewhat resemble passages from Holy Monitor's "Southern Lights" , looking for parallels to bands such as Zement or Oslo Tapes , one will hardly make finds. Instead, it is easier spotting similarities to the sound of Etxe Records acts like Blackout Transmission or Silo Halo . The major reason are probably the dreamy synthetic sounds that define a huge part of the music on "Aftertouch" as well as the both, artistic and poppy approach provided by the band. Coming up to their band name, Absolutely Free convey the feeling of being airborne. And while that impression may remin

News: Shae Brock - Mary Jane (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Shae Brock   Shae Brock - Mary Jane Release Date: September 01, 2021 Length: 04:18 Genre: Dream Rock Origin: Los Angeles , CA , USA In her latest single, LA's Shae Brock follows the question about who is Mary Jane. The Arizona-born artist tells about a mystical person - 'Mary Jane' is both a real person and the idea of a person. Between our reality and the world behind the mirror, Mary Jane is a dream, is a muse, is a patroness, and is a person that comes to life on both sides of the looking glass. The Dream Rock Shae Brock uses to tell the fantastic story of Mary Jane is a sonic reverie that arises from late-60s Psychedelic Rock, contemporary Indie Rock, and a thick but gentle mist of dreams and passion. Driven by a beautiful and warm bass line, Shae Brock's latest single becomes a sweet and hypnotizing declaration of love for the supernatural - a song to dive into and to fall in love with.
