CD Review: Mäkkelä - Dog & Typewriter (2021)

Image
Mäkkelä - Dog & Typewriter Release Date: September 24, 2021 Label: 9pm Records / Broken Silence Format: CD / Digital Length: 42:10 Genre:  Folk Noir Origin:  Fürth ,  Germany Middle Franconia's darkest musical story-teller, Mäkkelä, is back with his new album "Dog & Typewriter". The twelve-track album was between lockdowns, in a time when travelling Mäkkelä was not allowed to fulfill his regular pensum of annual live shows. And yet, it is not a typical COVID album. Instead, Mäkkelä goes on with his routine, telling beautiful, sad, melancholic, and atmospheric stories about meeting people, exploring the world, being on the road, taking five and reflecting about life, and about life itself. Unlike latest release " Trad and Anger ", "Dog & Typewriter" is available for streaming on Bandcamp and Spotify, but of course having this CD in your car stereo is always the better choice, isn't it? Dog & Typewriter by Mäkkelä Eleven original t...

EP Review: Shattercones - This Septic Isle (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Alec Bowman-Clarke   Shattercones - This Septic Isle Release Date: October 01, 2021 Label: Gare du Nord Records Format: Digital Length: 19:33 Genre: Doom Folk Origin: London , England In 2017, the book "Alice in Brexitland" by Lucien Young (Leavis Carroll)  was published. It is a fantastic and psychedelic read about a place where you do not have to be mad - but it helps if you are. The name of this country is Britain. Although, Shattercones have (probably) not planned this, but nevertheless the quartet has released a new EP today which could be the soundtrack to this book. The successor to their debut EP " Oppenheimer " (2020) is called "This Septic Isle", and sorry there are no prizes for guessing which isle the quartet from London means. Four tracks, all written and recorded between lockdowns reflect the bitter truth that many people in the United Kingdowm woke up in after David Cameron  had the stupid idea of appeasing UKIP by allowing a...

News: Molosser - Ellesmere Island (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Molosser     Molosser - Ellesmere Island Release Date: September 03, 2021 Length: 03:38 Genre:  Folk Rock Origin:  Uråsa ,  Sweden Uråsa's Folk Rock duo Tess  and Jahn , also known as Molosser, will probably not need any further introduction since they have appeared on MangoWave quite frequently, as you can see by clicking here . If you want to know more about the two artists from Sweden, the review of their album "Appear" might be the best way to learn about them. The single on hand was originally featured on that very album as well - a full-length release consisting of nine A-Sides as it was called. On 'Ellesmere Island', Molosser take us to a cold, cold place: Canada's northernmost island Ellesmere - also known as Umingmak Nuna in the Inuktitut language. With guitars tuned so low they could salvage ship wrecks from the Arctic Sea, and percussions as soft as the noises of steps through thick snow, Molosser musick the atmosphere of the spa...

News: Molosser - Back in Black (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Molosser / Evil Ear   Molosser - Back in Black (AC/DC Cover) Release Date: September 17, 2021 Length: 03:38 Genre:  Folk Rock Origin:  Uråsa ,  Sweden Swedish duo Molosser has become a frequently featured band on MangoWave. You will find previous articles and reviews on the music by Tess  and Jahn   here . Their newest output is something I would not have expected. The bigger is the surprise. 'Back in Black', originally written and performed by a band from Australia that I find extremely overrated, is the latest video release by Molosser, and actually it has become pretty cool! Although the cover version does not feature too many of the thrilling dark harmonies that make Molosser's original songs so exciting, the duo has hereby created a cool camp fire version of the rock classic. Whether AC/DC fans will like it as much as I do, I cannot tell. Content from the  MangoNews  will always stay in the  MangoRotation  playlist f...

News: Molosser - Ray of Moonlight (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Varghem Visuals / Evil Ear   Molosser - Ray of Moonlight Release Date: July 05, 2021 Length: 05:05 Genre:  Folk Rock Origin:  Uråsa ,  Sweden Let's be honest. Molosser's album "Appear" is a collection of hits and bangers. If you wanted to read my review of the full-length, click here . Hence, it is only comprehensible that the Swedish duo is releasing single after single from their first longplayer. The latest of these singles is the stunning track 'Ray of Moonlight' which apparently will be the second but last single release from "Appear" before ' Ellesmere Island ' will get its own video later this year. The song title 'Ray of Moonlight' is like onomatopeia to the music of the track. With their bitter-sweet and darkishly atmospheric sonic art, Molosser enchant their audience once more. Thus, 'Ray of Sunlight' feels like a silver stream of light breaking through thick clouds and reflecting on the cold surface ...

Album Review: Molosser - Appear (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Molosser   Molosser - Appear Release Date: May 11, 2021 Label: Evil Ear Format: Digital Length: 48:13 Genre: Folk Rock Origin:  Uråsa ,  Sweden Contemporarily, Central and Northern Europe are going through their annual heat wave, called Summer. Luckily, here is something to cool down our minds and bodies: "Appear", the debut album by Swedish Folk Rock duo Molosser. If the name rings a bell, that might be because two of the album's ex ante singles were presented on this site: " Unsolid " and " Solid Gold ". On their nine-track debut, Jahn  (acoustic guitar) and Tess  (acoustic guitar, vocals, drums) let us dive into the gorgeous and countryside of their rural home in Uråsa - a community of around 20 people, and hence so small, the only Wikipedia articles about it are written in Swedish and Estonian . The signature features of the music by Molosser are the downtuned guitars, the jazzy percussions, the dark harmony of the folky riffs, and...

News: Christian Wethered - La Madeleine (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Christian Wethered   Christian Wethered - La Madeleine Release Date: May 10, 2021 Length: 05:04 Genre: Indie Folk Origin: Dublin , Ireland Christian Wethered  is a gifted sing and songwriter based in the capital of the Republic if Ireland whom you should keep in mind. With "La Madeleine", Wethered  has released the fourth single of his upcoming album "Mon Petit Jardin". The song's title is a reference to the small town of the same name where Christian Wethered  used to live. Together with Dylan Lynch  (drums), Sara O'Loughlin  (backing vocals), and Cil Byrne  (electric guitar, bass), Christian Wethered  has musicked the atmosphere of his former hometown in the French Départment du Nord. Christian Wethered · La Madeleine "La Madeleine" is a melacholically sweet slow jam. It is a Folk song full of passion, wistfulness, and desire for something impossible to put into words. Via bittersweet gloom, Christian Wethered  and his fel...

News: Molosser - Solid Gold (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Solid Gold   Molosser - Solid Gold Release Date: April 14, 2021 Length: 06:15 Genre:  Folk Rock Origin:  Uråsa ,  Sweden Following " Unsolid ", here is another single release from Molosser's album  " Appear ". The six-minute track paints beautifully swinging images by only using downtuned guitar, drums and, vocals. The colours of this sonic painting are saturated, thick, dark, and smell of semi-sweet red wine. The soundscape on this gorgeous piece of Folk Rock is a bit less jazzy than on "Unsolid". Instead, the bittersweet melancholy is even thicker here. Molosser's "Solid Gold" is a deeply soothing reverie spreading passion, warmth, and the urge to light a candle. This is independent dark Folk Rock for the campfire site, for an endless journey, and for the passionate. Molosser have once more produced a sensual and hypnotizing song. Content from the  MangoNews  will always stay in the  MangoRotation  playlist for 14 days. ...

CD Review: Mäkkelä - Trad & Anger (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Mäkkelä Artwork: Frisches Ufo vor der Stadt Mäkkelä - Trad & Anger Release Date: April 01, 2021 Label: 9pm Records / Folk's Worst Nightmare Format: CD Length: 37:39 Genre: Folk Noir Origin: Fürth , Germany There are two reasons why I commence this review with an unpacking video. Firstly, Mäkkelä's "Trad & Anger" is a physical only release. You can order the CD on the artist's homepage, but there will be no Bandcamp, Spotify, TikTok, Myspace, whatever version. You find the link to the homepag at the bottom of the page. Secondly, packaging, artwork, and design are just gorgeous. Each CD is packed by hand and comes with a unique stamp. The stamp on my CD is from former Czecho-Slovakia and once cost 120 Koruna. Why a physical-only release you might ask? Forprofessional musicians such as Mäkkelä, a year without concerts and tours has been... let's stay special. And with special circumstances come special releases. "Trad & Anger...
