Image
Picture Credit: Hydrogyn Hydrogyn - The Boiling Point Release: October 30, 2020 Label: RFL Records Format: CD / Digital Length: 50:40 Genre: Hard Rock / Alternative Metal Origin: Ashland (Kentucky) , USA "The Boiling Point" is the 11th longplayer by American Hard Rock and Metal band Hydrogyn. After vocalist Julie Westlake  had to leave the band due to health issues it has become quite quiet around Hydrogyn. But here are the good news we need to hear in this weird year: Hydrogyn are back! And their newest release introduces their new vocalist Holly Hines Freed ! Are you ready for some intense Hard Rock and dark Alternative Metal? "The Boiling Point" contains thirteen new tracks. Well okay, three of them are covers, but I'll come back to that later. Hydrogyn have returned with some honest and autochthonous Hard Rock. Songs like 'Widowmaker' are defined by massively heavy riffs, swift licks and an intensely grinding sound. Heck yes, this is some dirty an

EP Review: Rovar - Rovar (2020)

Picture Credit: Rovar Rovar - Rovar Release: October 30, 2020 Label: Bug Valley Records Format: CD / Digital Length: 18:24 Genre: Heavy Rock / Blues Rock Origin: Münster , Germany Luca  (vocals and guitar) and Paul  (bass) have known each other for quite some time and they have shared several music projects in the past. In spring 2018 they were joined by drummer Bennet . And you might already have assumed what happened next. A rock'n roll band was born. So, is this where the review ends? Rock band in classic line up playing everyday-normal-rock? Fortunately not! But better listen yourselves before continue reading. [video contains butt] The music Rovar play is a velvet wrecking ball of Heavy Rock. Blues motifs stomp forward like a whirlwind and spread comfortable dynamics by high pace. I'd call this highspeed heavy Blues. On top the crunchy and compressed effects make the atmosphere appear very dazy. Rovar's debut sounds like attending an intense Rock'n Roll concert

Album Review: Corners of Sanctuary - Heroes never die (2020)

Picture Credit: Corners of Sanctuary Artwork: A Creations Productions Corners of Sanctuary - Heroes never die Release Date: October 30, 2020 Label: RFL Records Format: CD / Digital Length: 39:31 Genre: Heavy Metal Origin: Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) , USA Corners of Sanctuary were formed in 2011. Nine years later they have already released their seventh longplayer. That I was I would productivity and an high-paced output. The band's mission is to keep Metal alive - and not just any kind of Metal. Corners of Sanctuary play New Wave of Traditional American Heavy Metal, or NWoTAHM. On a dozen tracks Corners of Sanctuary present a rough and rolling version of tradtional Heavy Metal. The tempi are not too fast, instead they focus on grooving rhythms and shifted offbeat patterns. Each song sounds like a hymn that reminds us of the glorious dawn of Heavy Metal. "Heroes never die" is the release to put your leather jacket on and either hit the road or do a long-ass pub crawl. Single Review: City and Colour - Low Songs (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: City and Colour City and Colour - Low Songs Release: June 19, 2020 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 08:50 Genre: Indie / Ambient Origin: St. Catharines (Ontario), Canada It has been quite some time since the last Reader Suggestion was posted here. But recently, a good friend asked if I'd be interested in reviewing City and Colour's latest Single "Low Songs". I didn't know the artists before so I gave it a listen, and yes, I am interested! "Low Songs" is not called that way because the songs are low. The name derives from the fact that City and Colour has reinterpreted two songs by Dallas-based band Low. The two songs 'Murderer' and 'Sunflower' have already made it to TV, as thy were featured in documentary reports and series . The interpretations of the two songs by City and Colour follow the basic structure of Low's originals. Nevertheless, the Canadian musician alterates the two pieces to give them a

Album Review: ΕΙΕΝ - In this Game (2019)

Greece It has been quite around Athens' Modern Heavy Metal band ΕΙΕΝ for some years. " The Sickening " was released back in 2014. But five years later the qunitet from the Greek capital are back with their newest release "In this Game". It is a nother pre-COVID work on this channel. I would say we keep up some positivity. Whether a "1984"-themed album can come up to this, I don't want to argue about. The line-up on the newest ΕΙΕΝ album is: Andy P  - bass, Paris X  - guitars, Thanos K  - drums, Tim V  - guitars, Mike A  - vocals, and the guests Nikos Panagiotopoulos  - bass, and Chrysa Tsaltampasi  - vocals on the tracks 'Where I belong', 'The last Messiah' and 'Seize the Day'. Album Review: Habitar La Mar - Comedia Yoica (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Habitar La Mar Artwork: The Braves Church Habitar La Mar - Comedia Yoica Release: February 02, 2020 Label: Violence in the Veins Format: Vinyl / CD / Digital Length: 20:53 Genre: Noise / Sludge / Alternative Origin: Jaén , Spain Habitar La Mar from North East Andalucía have released their latest album "Comedia Yoica" before the first lockdown. So let's all remember there was a time with stuff like live gigs, moshpits and so on. Whether "Comedia Yoica" is an EP or an album I don't wanna argue. Nevertheless, with ~20 minutes of sound it is a rather small release. But don't judge a record by its length. Those 20:53 are crammed with intense sound. "Comedia Yoica" contains seven tracks on which Habitar La Mar present a savage and eclectic mix of styles. Grinding noise sounds create the backbone of this release. Atop of this there are intense riffs and breaks that can be listed under Sludge for the most part. And finally, Habitar

EP Review: Karina Kvist - Nur was, ist die Frage (2020)

Picture Credit: Karina Kvist Artwork: Metta Karina Kvist - Nur was, ist die Frage. Release: October 10, 2020 Label: Zilpzalp Records / Tanz auf Ruinen / Lynx Records / Non Si Tegua Records Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 16:19 Genre: Screamo  / Emocore Origin: Bamberg , Germany "Nur was, ist die Frage." is the newest release by Bamberg's Screamo band Karina Kvist. The German title can be translated to "But what? That is the question". The position of the comma is crucial for the meaning here. If it was "Nur, was ist die Frage", it would mean "But what is the question?". And Karina Kvist have implemented some more intelligent plays on words. The track 'Flucht wagen' for example means 'to risk a getaway'. Nevertheless, it is a homophone to 'Fluchtwagen' which means 'getway car'. And finally, 'Beide, ausgelöscht' can be translated to 'both of them, obliterated'. Without the comma that would be

Album Review: Matriarchs - Year of the Rat (2020)

Picture Credit: Matriarchs Matriarchs - Year of the Rat Release: October 16, 2020 Label: Upstate Records Format: CD / Digital Length: 34:00 Genre: Metalcore Origin: Los Angeles (California) , USA You might not be surprised that in the Chinese calendar, 2020 is the year of the rat. Los Angeles' Metalcore band has thus good reasons to name their new album. And you might also guess that their newest release is a very angry one. What else can you feel when our daily lives are constantly confronted with the causes of a global pandemic. Anyways, here we are. Written reviews are back and the first one will hence be "Year of the Rat" by Matriarchs". This is half an hour of sheer force. Matriarchs play a brutal mix of Metalcore and Beatdown Hardcore. The rough riffs are defined by plentyful variation in tempo and metre and of course, lots of breaks and beatdowns add to the brachial soundscape. This is music for intense workouts, for getting rid of all your anger, and of cou

Album Review: Salem's Childe - The Sin that saves you (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Salem's Childe Salem's Childe - The Sin that saves you Release: October 09, 2020 Label: Pavement Music Format: Digital Length: 47:14 Genre: Thrash Metal / Groove Metal Origin: Kokomo (Indiana) , USA "The Sin that saves you" is the first full-length release by Indiana's Groove and Thrash Metal quintet Salem's Childe. Four years ago the band gatecrashed the Metal universe with their EP " Paradise Lost ". Now the first album can be purchased via Pavement Music. Salem's Childe are: Scott Earley  - drums, James Gates  - bass, Aaron Crick  - guitar, Rob Salem  - guitar, and Johnny Oravsky  - vocals. On a dozen tracks Salem's Childe play their grooving, modern and intense style of Thrash Metal. It appears as if the band has received a lot of influence from the early 90s. On the one hand there is a strong impact of the modern version of Thrash Metal such as Machine Head or Black Album-Metallica. But on the other hand, Salem's C

Album Review: Arcadian ¥ Child - Protopsycho (2020)

Picture Credit: Arcadian ¥ Child Artwork: Nun Other   Arcadian ¥ Child - Protopsycho Release: October 09, 2020 Format: Vinyl / CD / Tape / Digital Label: Kozmik Artifactz / Ripple Music Length: 37:25 Genre: Psychedelic Rock / Stoner Rock Origin: Limassol , Cyprus Always happy when my musical atlas gets rid of another blank spot. This time it's the East Mediterranean island state of Cyprus that is being added to my sound map. More precisely, today's discovery leads us to the 230.000 inhabitants-town of Limassol in Southern Cyprus. Limassol is the home of Constantinos Pavlides  (drums), Andreas Kerveros  (bass, backing vocals), Stathis Hadjicharalambous  (guitar) and Panagiotis I.G.  (guitar, vocals). Together they are  Arcadian ¥ Child. "Protopsycho" is already the third album by  Arcadian ¥ Child. The band has been very active, looking at their catalogue so far: " Afterglow " came out in autumn 2017 and " Superfonica " was released in late 2018. E

Album Review: Automatism - Immersion (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Automatism  Automatism - Immersion Release: October 09, 2020 Label: Tonzonen Records Format: Vinyl / CD / Digital Length: 47:00 Genre: Psychedelic Krautjazz / Post Rock Origin: Stockholm , Sweden Earlier this year, I reviewed the sophomore longplayer by Stockholm's finest quartet Automatism " Into the Sea ". Now Automatism have already released their third album "Immersion" and it seems like they are really happy releasing their music via the amazing Krefeld-based label Tonzonen Records . "Immersion" features six new tracks on which the band proves that are not tired a bit. Instead, they constantly develop their unique style and have thus created an impressive work of progressive music. The sharp-dressed trio from the North are Jonas Yrlid  (drums), Mikael Tuominen  (bass), Gustav Nygren  (guitar) and Hans Hjelm  (guitar). On "Immersion" they receive additive support by Jakob Sjöholm  who plays a scratchy guitar on the final
