The musician from Turkey studied in the Franconia town Nuremberg where he and his band recorded three albums and one single untiel the year 1985. Now, 36 years after İmece published their last work, Ironhand Records are releasing a 4-track EP containing remastered versions of the original tapes on vinyl. "Veda" (Turkish: "Farewell") is a beautiful hommage to the exceptional works of  Mustafa Kuş . With lightfooted ease İmece combine Funk, Jazz and certain traces of Krautrock with Anatolian Pop. Driven by galopping polyrhythmic drums, İmece create a colorful bouquet of moving, catchy and yet sophisticated sounds. And after all, this is the sound of the 70s and 80s that

Album Review: Love Machine - Düsseldorf-Tokyo (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Love Machine Love Machine - Düsseldorf-Tokyo Release Date: February 26, 2021 Label: Unique Records Format: Vinyl / CD / Digital Length: 38:12 Genre: Krautrock / Indie Rock Origin: Düsseldorf , Germany Düsseldorf is the second biggest town in the German Federal State of Northrhine-Westphalia, and it is also the capital of this State in the Northwest of the Federal Republic of Germany. Furthermore, Düsseldorf is home to the biggest Japanese community and the only Japantown on German soil. Thus, the name of Love Machine's new album is comprehensible. No other Germany town is closer to Tokyo than Düsseldorf is. "Düsseldorf-Tokyo" is a ten-track big city blues. Love Machine soulfully music melancholic thoughts and feelings that erase from within the anonymous mass of a metropolitan area. Stream-of-Consciousness narratives describe everyday situations of human life in an urban agglomeration, and thoughtful fiction tells us about consumerism, loneliness and drea

EP Review: Isphet - By your own Hands (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Isphet Isphet - By your own Hands Release Date: February 23, 2021 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 39:23 Genre:  Prog Metal  /  Ambient Origin:  Novo Mesto ,  Slovenia Novo Mesto's Isphet is very productive these days. With the EP " Escape Room " released in January, the follow-up work "By your own Hands" was out only three weeks later. This EP was inspired by the "Alien" franchise created by Ridley Scotts . And since I hardly know anything about this franchise, this review will solely focus on the music created by one-person-band Isphet. I can tell from the description on the Bandcamp site that "By your own Hands" concerns existence, creation, and self destruction - just humankind things. By Your Own Hands by Isphet The five tracks on "By your own Hands" are very atmospheric. The Nu Metal impact from the previous release has mostly vanished. Instead, Isphet is now merging their Prog Metal with meditative

Album Review: The Mountain King - The Smell of Stars and Vomit (2021)

Picture Credit: The Mountain King Artwork: Emil Underbjerg The Mountain King - The Smell of Stars and Vomit Release Date: February 28, 2021 Label: Cursed Monk Records Format: CD / Cassette / USB / Digital Length: 95:11 Genre: Space Doom Origin: Mainz , Germany In my first shared flat I had a room mate who had a relative working for the ESA . Hence, he had a shirt saying "Space is cool", probably the best garment I have ever seen ( Tobi , if you read this, hey mate, hope you're fine!). And yes, space is cool! Buy why is it so cool? Well, space is fascinating. But in our times, it is predominantly an opportunity for a getaway, regarding how much we have screwed up our own planet. And this is one of the main aspects, the new album by Mainz' The Mountain King is about - leaving Earth and conquering new frontiers. "The Smell of Stars and Vomit" is a 95-minute one-track release. Several plots about a fantastic odyssey away from our home planet merge into each othe

EP Review: schubsen - Sprachfetzen (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: schubsen schubsen - Sprachfetzen Release Date: February 26, 2021 Label: Swing Deluxe Format: Digital Length: 19:54 Genre: Punk Rock / Post Punk Origin: Nuremberg , Germany Welcome to another episode of "Learning German with MangoWave". Today, we are having a release on hand that is primarily dedicated to language and its power. The EP is hence called "Sprachfetzen" which I would translate to "speech fragments" or "parole shreds". The band name schubsen means "to shove" or "to push", but actually rather belongs to the realms of motherese or caretaker speech. schubsen are from Nuremberg, the biggest town in Franconia, and a place where the power of language was proven in its most cruel way. Sprachfetzen EP by schubsen The most impressive phrase of the EP is uttered in the song 'Marode Silben' ('ramshackle syllables'): "Sprache schafft Realität, Sprache strafft Stabilität. (Laguage creates r

Album Review: Holy Monitor - Southern Lights (2021)

Picture Credit: Holy Monitor Artwork: Bewild Brother Holy Monitor - Southern Lights Release Date: February 26, 2021 Label: Blackspin Records Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 39:42 Genre: Krautrock / Space Rock / Psychedelic Rock Origin: Athens , Greece The year 2021 is only 57 days old, and Holy Monitor have already released a potential candidate for the album of the year. The quintet from Athens, Greece presents their third full-length publication "Southern Lights" - a forty-minute psychedelic kraut trip to the deepest and most colourful corners of space. Click here to save your copy of this stunning sonic journey. As you will know, a space vessel is always as good as its crew. And, in this case, the crew is doing a job and a half to make this interstellar journey and unforgettable experience. In the engine room, there is drummer Dimitris Doumouliakas  who accelerates the ship with his heavy and krauty motion. Alex Bolpasis  on the bass is using warm and sonorous sounds to

Album Review: Maynard - On the Verge of Sth. (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: Maynard Maynard - On the Verge of Sth. Release Date: February 26, 2021 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 34:30 Genre: ( Post- ) Grunge / Stoner Rock Origin: Berlin , Germany The 1990s were a weird time. Being born in the late 1980s, I have witnessed this strange decade very well. And for about almost ten years, we have experienced a big 90s revival. In the beginning that was horrible. Predominantly, people who were born between 1995 and 2005 went to so-called 90s parties and pretended to enjoy the crappy music by Scooter, DJ Bobo or Rednex. Geez, that pissed me off like crazy. But the nineties had amazing music, too. Think of L7, Alanis Morrisette or Soundgarden. It was the rise of Grunge and Alternative Rock that made this era so special (amongst many other things, of course). And this is now finally getting its revival, too. With bands like Passionless Pointless , 24/7 Diva Heaven , Hand Off Gretel or Riot Spears , one of the best musical impact from the 90

Album Review: MOOP - Ostara (2021)

Image
Picture Credit: MOOP Artwork: Marie-Laure Morin MOOP - Ostara Release Date: February 26, 2021 Label: Tonzonen Format: Vinyl / Cassette / CD / Digital Length: 34:13 Genre: Brutal Jazz / Zeuhl Origin: Poitiers , France Around 20 months have passed since Poitiers' MOOP released their selftitled album . Now, Julien , Erwin , and   William  are back with their sophomore album that is named after a Pagan celebration in Spring. With baritone sax, guitar, and drums MOOP let the madness continue. Apparently, the band has shrunk from a quartet to a trio since their last release but you should not expect their sound to any thinner or less eclectic due to that change. Picture Credit: MOOP MOOP easily carry on where they left off with their first album. They keep on exploring the cut between Jazz and Rock and dig deep while doing so. Zappaesque compositions create a caleidoscope of colours unknown to human perception. Compared to its predecessor, "Ostara" is a lot more dark and spook

Album Review: Volvopenta - Simulacrum (2021)

Picture Credit: Volvopenta Volvopenta - Simulacrum Release Date: September 14, 2020 (digital) / February 26, 2021 (physical) Label: Tonzonen Format: Vinyl / CD / Digital Length: 48:56 Genre: Ambient / Noise / Krautrock Origin: Mülheim an der Ruhr , Germany The Ruhr area in the West of the Federal Republic of Germany is famous for its post-industrial charme and its vibrant culture. The region has become one of the most versatile hot spots for all sorts of artistic output in Central Europe. Being one of the largest metropolitan agglomeration areas on the continent, the "Ruhrgebiet" ans its residents are actively fighting the grey tristesse of their new reality. Like flowers that grow in cracks in the tarmak of abandoned industrial zones, the Ruhr area is growing its new post-industrial culture. Mülheim's Volvopenta are a great example for this movement. The quartet produces a unique sound that musicks the charged ambivalence of grey dystopia and the colourful hope for reb
