Two years later, their first long-player "Barely Buried Love" was co-released via ten labels. The records was released on Valentine's Day, 2020. But be aware, that "Barely Buried Love" is not very romantic. The thirteen tracks are defined by their short runtime. Only the songs 'Swallow' and 'Saudade' are around three minutes long. But Crossed do not need much time to musick their messages. Melancholia, pain, suffering...

Album Review: Mather - This is the Underground (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Mather Mather - This is the Underground Release Date: April 26, 2020 Label: Violence in the Veins Format: Vinyl / CD / Digital Length: 47:59 Genre: Psychedelic Prog Origin: Patras , Greece Peleponnesian band Mather was formed in the year 2017. Plenty of concerts and less than three years later, their debut was out on vinyl and CD. "This is the Underground" features seven tracks on which the band proves that they can compete with the big names in Psych, Prog and Heavy Rock. The music on "This is the Underground" is defined by two main features. Firstly, there is that Pink Floyd-like Psychedelic Prog Rock. The atmosphere on Mather's debut smells similar to "A momentary Lapse of "Reason" partially. Considering that the Pink Floyd album features the song learning to fly, and that Mather's cover artwork is a plane wreck, that is kind of ironic. The other dominant element is intense Heavy Rock that is defned by a strong bass and a ce...

Ernia is a quartet from Logroño, the capital of the autonomous region of La Rioja in Spain. The music the bands provides us with is pure anarchy mixed with musical skill. The style can be located somehwere between Grindcore, Powerviolence, Death Metal and Jazz. It is the liaison of brutality and genius that make this album so interesting. Ernia joyf...

Album Review: Electric Belt - Never seen the Devil (2019)

Image
Artwork by Tomás Fernández Electric Belt - Never seen the Devil Release Date: March 18, 2019 Label: Spinda Records / Odio Sonoro / Zona Rock Productions / Violence in the Veins / Fuzz T-Shirts / Discos Macarras Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 34:22 Genre: Heavy Rock / Blues Rock Origin: Jaén , Spain Hello and welcome to another  MangoSpecial ! This is Part 4/4 of the special dedicated to Spanish Independent Label Violence in the Veins. Let's end this special with some Heavy Blues. Electric Belt from Jaén in Andalucia seduce our ears with some rough sound that can be located somewhere between the Mississippi Delta, the Summer of Love, and the climax of a mescaline trip in the middle of the desert. Get ready for some beautifully stunning and heavy Blues Rock. Driving motor of this amazing release is the ginding ambivalence between the lightfootedness of Electric Belt's Blues Rock and the intense raw and occult sounds of their Psychedelic and Heavy Rock impact. "Never s...

Album Review: Space Deer - The Forest (2020)

Artwork: Tumulus Design Space Deer - The Forest Release Date: September 18, 2020 Label: Bandera Records / Gato Encerrado Records / Nooirax / Violence in the Veins Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 45:52 Genre: Stoner Rock  / Heavy Rock Origin: Madrid , Spain Hello and welcome to another  MangoSpecial ! This is Part 3/4 of the special dedicated to Spanish Independent Label Violence in the Veins. After releasing two EPs  "I" (2017) , and "II" (2018) , Madrid's trio Space Deer stopped counting and named their first album "The Forest". Space Deer play in a classic arrangement with drums ( Robert ), bass ( Carlos ) and guitar ( Andrés ). Also, all three band members sing on this album. But let's take a closer look into "The Forest". All hail the Fuzz! What the band from Spain's capital is presenting here is heavily loaded Stoner Rock. The music exits the speakers in blurry lines and immediately has a sedating effect. And yet, Space Deer d...

Album Review: Mano de Piedra - Today's Ashes (2019)

Cover Artwork by Davidian444 Mano de Piedra - Today's Ashes Release Date: October 21, 2019 Label: Base Record Production / The Braves Records / La Fosa Nostra / Hecatombe Records / Hombre Montaña / Odio Sonoro / Violence in the Veins Format: Vinyl / Cassette / Digital Length: 40:17 Genre: Sludge / Stoner Metal Origin: Vigo , Spain Hello and welcome to another  MangoSpecial ! This is Part 2/4 of the special dedicated to Spanish Independent Label Violence in the Veins. "Today's Ashes" is the second long-player by Vigo's quartet Mano de Piedra (Spanish: "Stone Hand"). The band plays an exciting sound that can predominantly be categorized as Sludge and Stoner Metal. But while listening to the second album you will encounter a lot of different influences. There is Post Rock, 70s Psychedelic Rock, Crust Punk, Post Metal, Heavy Rock, Alternative Metal and much more. All this is wrapped up in a dark, eschatological and brutal envelope. Each riff on this al...

Album Review: Atomic Trip - Strike #1 (2017)

Image
Cover Artwork: Navette Atomic Trip - Strike #1 Release Date: July 11, 2017 Label: Doom & Doomer Records / Violence in the Veins / Wooaaargh / Rooster Records / The Eye of Moscow Records Format: Vinyl / CD / Digital Length: 38:18 Genre: Doom Metal / Sludge Origin: Lyon , France Hello and welcome to another MangoSpecial ! This is Part 1/4 of the special dedicated to Spanish Independent Label Violence in the Veins. We start with Atomic Trip's "Strike #1" which was released in 2017. One-and-a-half years later, there was a second strike, too. The nuclear strike we are talking about here, is segemented into two bombs. Each of them are big enough to fill out a side of the vinyl record which can be ordered in the colours plutonium green and uranium black. I would describe the music on "Strike #1" as follows. Imagine, you are sitting on a front porch or on a balcony and you have just finished rolling the perfect reefer. While lighting it up and taking the first hi...

Album Review: Habitar La Mar - Comedia Yoica (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Habitar La Mar Artwork: The Braves Church Habitar La Mar - Comedia Yoica Release: February 02, 2020 Label: Violence in the Veins Format: Vinyl / CD / Digital Length: 20:53 Genre: Noise / Sludge / Alternative Origin: Jaén , Spain Habitar La Mar from North East Andalucía have released their latest album "Comedia Yoica" before the first lockdown. So let's all remember there was a time with stuff like live gigs, moshpits and so on. Whether "Comedia Yoica" is an EP or an album I don't wanna argue. Nevertheless, with ~20 minutes of sound it is a rather small release. But don't judge a record by its length. Those 20:53 are crammed with intense sound. "Comedia Yoica" contains seven tracks on which Habitar La Mar present a savage and eclectic mix of styles. Grinding noise sounds create the backbone of this release. Atop of this there are intense riffs and breaks that can be listed under Sludge for the most part. And finally, Habitar ...

Album Review: Montecharge - Demons or someone else (2019)

Image
Picture Credit: Montecharge Artwork: Giganto Montecharge - Demons or someone else Release: December 27, 2019 Label: Violence in the Veins Format: Vinyl / CD / Digital Length: 36:04 Genre: Sludge / Post Hardcore Origin: Geneva , Switzerland Geneva's Montecharge have been around for quite some time. In late 2019 they finally released their debut LP via Spanish label Violence in the Veins. The output is an 11-track album with a very interesting (or artistic) order of songs. The eight songs are numbered XVIII, XIV, XII, XV, XVI, XVII, XIX, XX. Furthermore, there are three tracks called 'Atone' which are ordered II, I, III. Maybe, I just don't get it, or this is pure nihilism. Either way, it does not mar the quality of "Demons or someone else" a bit. Montecharge serve us a violent but sophisticated melange of Blackened Sludge, Noise and Post Hardcore. Brachial riffs are interrupted by intelligent breakdowns while intonation and accentuation create powerful dynam...
