The 7'' record yiu can see on the picture above contains six tracks that were recorded by Berlin's Düsterpunk band Es War Mord (German: It Was Murder) during one afternoon. It is the fourth part of the Four Track Mind singles series by Berlin's label Tomatenplatten (previous parts: Vol 01 - Black Heino, Vol 02 - Mir Express, Vol 03 - 13 Year Cicada). With the 01:48-minute-song 'in der Hitze' der Küche (German: 'in the Kitchen's Heat') being the single's longest track, you can imagine that this release is extremely diverting and entertaining.
Es War Mord call their sound Düsterpunk which can be translated to Dark Punk or Grim Punk. The sound reminds of legendary 1980s Punk Rock from Germany played by bands such as Razzia, or Upright Citizens, mixed with the dark sounds of Depropunk à la EA80, or Fliehende Stürme, and completed with intelligent and metaphoric lyrics in the style of Jens Rachut (Blumen am Arsch der Hölle, Dackelblut, Angeschissen, Oma Hans, ...).
The A-Side begins with 'Dunke Töne' (German: 'Dark Notes' or 'Dark Nuances'), a song that could either be about depression or about the comeback of fascist ideals in our society. Es War Mord continue with 'Foto', in which a photograph of a person triggers emotions in the protagonist's mind. And then, 'Papa Punk' deals with the old age of Punk Rock as a subculture and the need for reforming ideas within it. The B-Side is rather defined by conflict. Thus, 'Die Differenz' concerns the complexity of finding a consensus for people, while 'In der Hitze der Küche' is about passive aggressive warfare fought between people who live together. And finally, 'Aua' (German expression for 'Ouch') is about communation gone wrong.
"In der Miesouppe" is a true gem of German Punk Rock. Timeless, dark, and rough.
