Birdman Cult – Let me out

Genre:
Post Punk / Stoner Rock
Origin:
Bristol, England

Over the past 13 months, Bristol’s Birdman Cult have had some appearances on MangoWave which you can find here. With a sarcastic sense of humour and thrilling guitar music, the band from South West England share their sceptical, cynical and critical view on the world with us. Currently, the quintet is working on an EP which can be expected to drop in late 2022. On this road, Birdman Cult present their latest Single ‘Let me out’ which has been released Bristol’s Donut Records.

‘Let me out’ is the track for everyone who knows the feeling of coming back to one’s original hometown. It is this weird cocktail of emotions, memories, vicinity, and estrangement. Often it feels like as if time has stood still here while you yourself have gone through some strong development and progress. And now coming back here makes you feel you do not fit anymore. Like a time-traveller you wander through the roads, struck by that realization that you do not live here anymore. It is a story that Birdman Cult frontman Joe has experienced himself recently when visiting his own former hometown. And it is a feeling that many people these days (including myself) can relate with.

The music that Birdman Cult wrap this gloomy narrative in fits this instance perfectly. The fuzzy Post Punk theme of the first part is steadily and melancholically plodding forward while a thick mist of Shoegaze effects depicts the insuperable barrier between the protagonist and their former home. The sound that partially reminds of the music played by The Smiths before their vocalist became a right-wing, antisemite arsehole, creates a thick and gloomy mood. When this wall of emotions reaches its peak, the protagonist begins to accept the new status between them and their origin. Thus, the foggy Post Punk transitions into some heavily rolling Stoner Rock. It is sound that stands for emancipation, for cutting one’s ties, for freeing oneself. The soundscape becomes more intense, and it has now completely moved from a sad look back to a proactive search for an exit. And just like that, Birdman Cult have successfully interpreted the liberation from nostalgia within only three minutes.

This song is perfect for leaving places you do not want to go any more, like your ex’s house, or of course an estrange former hometown.
