Album Review: Mental Disaster - The Repulsive Abomination (2020)

When promoting their third album "The Repulsive Abomination" Mental Disaster said it would contain 100% brutality. I have made the maths, and before going into the review, I can assure you that the quartet from Kristiansand told us the truth. Brutal truth, I would even say.
On their recent releases the Norwegian band has proven that they love imagery your priest would not approve of. Their humouristic blasphemy is once again displayed by brachial Death Metal mixed with highspeed Thrash Metal influences. For around 33 minutes Mental Disaster hack, slay, torch, dismember and eradicate everything that could be sacred. With "The Repulsive Abomination" the band has created a beautiful presentation of blood, gore, violence, blasphemy and doom.
The musical concept on Mental Disaster's third album is simple but genius. Drummer David Olsen (Faanefjell) uses his sticks and pedals like meat hooks, axes and the throttle of a tank to mow everything down with brachial and highspeed pace. Bengt Orstads (Blot) bass creates a massive and astonishingly heavy foundation of brutally grooving and rolling riffs. Guitar player Bernt Sørensen (In the Woods...) acoompanies him from time to time or adds brachial but somewhat melodic additions to the intense riffs. On top there is vocalist Jan Åge Lindeland (Blot) who growls, grunts and screams through the octaves with an immense intensity.
Contrary to my own expectations the melodic leads and licks fit the brutal atmosphere very good. They emphasize the Thrash Metal impact of the high tempo Death Metal presented on "The Repulsive Abomination".
Mental Disaster's third album was released on Valentine's Day 2020 via Death to Music Productions and is one of the strongest and most intense Death Metal albums I have recently experienced. Unfussy, straightforward and brachial Death Metal for lovers of Death Metal.
