Album Review: Crosson - Rock'n Roll Love Affair (2020)
Rock music is one of those timeless instances in our modern world. New subgenres of Rock music appear, some evolve, others stagnate, some reform, and in general there's a lot of intertemporal movement in Rock music which I really enjoy. One of those recurring and ever reappearing subgenres is Glam Rock. Sometimes it gets mixed with cool Space Rock and Heavy Rock'n Roll and then a great album such as Giuda's "E.V.A." is being released. Sometimes it puts on ridiculous masks and wins the Grand Prix d'Eurovision de la Chanson. And sometimes it ends up in one of the best musicals of all time.
Another of those time travellers is the Sydney-based band Crosson. Their newest album "Rock'n Roll Love Affair" will be released via Galaxy Records on March 27 2020. The band is known for its shows at which the front man is accompanied by two young female dancers who might be younger than the band itself. Time travelling gimmicks that disturb me a bit less are the clothes, hair style, andthe album's cover that looks like a mixture of a Marvel comics spin-off and a Manowar tribute band.
Music-wise I am hardly entertained when listening to this album. Yes, this is straight Glam Rock, yes, it sounds like it was from the eighties, yes, Crosson do what the listeners expect them to do, but... seriously, Glam Rock can be innovative, Glam Rock can be versatile, Glam Rock can be interesting. This album is not. "Rock'n Roll Love Affair" tastes like the fifth rehash of a third-class drink. I am straight up bored by every song on this album that sounds like a tribute to an 80s cover band that nobody wants to be reminded of.
As deep as I dig into this album, the only group I can really recommend this to is Rock'n'Roll rednecks who think AC/DC actually were cool or fans of dicks such as Kid Rock or Ted Nugent. Songs such as 'Weak at the Knees (for a hot Brunette)' are the soundtrack for the pre-boomer generation of Rock'n'Roll fans who has not adapted to the social progress of the last forty years.
"Rock'n Roll Love Affair" is a great album for fans of Bon Jovi.
If you rather enjoy innovative, intelligent, interesting or good music, I recommend you to steer clear of this album.
