Album Review: Wail - Civilization Maximus (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Wail Wail - Civilization Maximus Release: September 18, 2020 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 39:11 Genre: Heavy Metal / Progressive Metal Origin: Lillehammer , Norway Personally, I think that around 50% of all Heavy Metal is pure satire. Probably, most Heavy Metal bands don't produce satire on their genre intendedly. Nevertheless, I often listen to the music and watch the band pictures or music videos and feel like "you cannot be serious about this hilarious display!". Also, I really like Heavy Metal. I enjoy the shows, I like the community behind it, and of course I like the music. Well, the release I am talking about is "Civilization Maximus", the sophomore album by Lillehammer's quintet Wail. And Wail openly claim that basically everything they do music-wise is satirical. Or do they? Wail are the self-declared preachers of the apocalypse of the civilized world. So, you always wanted to know who was responsible for every major

EP Review: After Earth - Before it awakes (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: After Earth After Earth - Before it awakes Release: September 18, 2020 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 18:00 Genre: Melodic Death Metal / Groove Metal Origin: Skövde , Sweden Swedish quintet After Earth has released their debut EP. Since there are several bands with that name, it is important to say that we are talking about After Earth from Skövde, Sweden. Also, the band should not be confused with 2013's film by M. Night Shyamalan . After Earth were founded in 2017 by Anton Vehkaperä  (drums), Marcus Rydstedt  (vocals) and Victor Lundblad  (guitar). It did not take long until Rob Olsson  (guitar) and Oscar Lindberg  (bass) completed the band. The first EP by Skövde's Metal export is a five-track release introduced by melodic instrumental 'Embers'. But once the last note has faded out, After Earth show what they are after. The following four tracks are defined by heavily grooving and melodic Death Metal. Tough riffs roll forward with ice c

Picture Credit: Rollin' Dice Artwork: Jon Toussas Rollin' Dice - Reroll Release: September 26, 2020 Label: selfrelease Format: CD / Digital Length: 37:13 Genre: Heavy Rock / Hard Rock Origin: Athens , Greece What do you after the dices have been cast? For Antonis Karathanasopoulos  (vocals, guitar), John Rompas  (bass, vocals) and Aggelos Kalogiannis  (drums) the answer is to roll again. "Reroll" is the second album by the power trio from the Greek capital which can be orderer via Vinyl-Store.gr . The album was recorded within a nine-day live session at Made in Hell Studios , Athens in August 2020, where David Prudent  took care of mix and master. The songwriting was done by the band themselves, except for some little help: for the song 'Pivoine' Fanis Tsougrianis  (acoustic bass) joined bass player Rompas  who played the classical guitar. And in 'Walking away' Stephanie Stephanides  supported Karathanasopoulos  in writing the lyrics. Some readers m

Single Review: Krause - Vague Outlines of almost recognisable Shapes/The Fraternity of lost Men-Children (2020)

Picture Credit: Krause Artwork: Daniel Goudelis Krause - Vague Outlines of almost recognisable Shapes / The Fraternity of lost Men-Children Release: September 26, 2020 Label: Inner Ear Records Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 08:38 Genre: Noise / Krautrock / Sludge Origin: Athens , Greece Athen's Krause are Nick Prapas  (drums), Kostas Kagkelaris  (bass, vocals), Alex Vagenas  (guitar, vocals) and Babis Kourkoulis  (guitar, vocals). The band was formed four years ago and has released two albus so far. For 2020's record store day, a new 7'' single is out. Let's have a closer look at this beast! A-Side: "Vague Outlines of almost recognisable Shapes" - 05:02 Oh yes, the name fits the sund perfectly. Krause create a thick swamp of sound. Fuzz, distortion and crunch come together in a mid-tempo Blues dance of doom. You can dissect this huge beast of sound layer by layer and find goregous noisy details every time. Highlight of the song is the Stoner-like guit

Album Review: 偏執症者 (Paranoid) - Out Raising Hell (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: 偏執症者 (Paranoid) Artwork: Anton Antanasov   偏執症者 (Paranoid) - Out Raising Hell Release: September 25, 2020 Label:  D-Takt & Råpunk / Konton Crasher Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 40:30 Genre: D-Beat / Thrash Metal Punk Origin: Frösön , Sweden Even though the Japanese name 偏執症者 could lead to other assumptions, we're listening to a band from Sweden today. Henrik Låsgårdh  (vocals/guitars), Joakim Staaf-Sylsjö  (bass/vocals) and Emil Bergslid  (drums) are presenting their third full-length album within five years. And as you might guess from looking at Anton Atanosov 's cover artwork, it is about to get raw and heavy. On ten tracks 偏執症者 play a powerful and brutal mix of D-Beat and Thrash Metal. Each song is defined by high-speed riffing and brachial insanity. Since all the titles are in Japanese, I will give you a little help here: 1. 晦冥勢力 (Dark Forces) 2. 機械仕掛けの殺戮者 (Mechanical Murderer) 3. まだ見ぬユートピア (Utopia not yet seen) 4. 光の館 (House of Light) 5. 墓場の目 (Ceme

Album Review: Kaskadeur - Uncanny Valley (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Kaskadeur Kaskadeur - Uncanny Valley Release: 25 September 2020 Label: Noisolution / Souldfood Format: Vinyl / CD / Digital Length: 36:19 Genre: Heavy Math Rock / Progressive Rock Origin: Potsdam , Germany In Potsdam, the capital of Germany's federal state of Brandenburg, there once was a band called Stonehenge. They were known for their Doom-laden and progressive Stoner Rock. After several albums, EPs and plenty of shows the quartet decided that it was time for a change. Hence, the band was disbanded for good. Apparently, they even deleted their Bandcamp account. But in a same breath, the four musicians founded their next band. And thus, we can now enjoy the first output under their new name Kaskadeur. Whether "Uncanny Valley" is a proper debut or not, one can argue. More important is the music presented on the 11-track album. The adjective fitting the most to the auditive presentation by Kaskadeur is anarchist. The quartet lets influences of their St

EP Review: Ewigkeit - 23 (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Ewigkeit   Ewigkeit - 23 Release: 23 September, 2020 Label: Death to Music Format: Digital Length: 23:00 Genre: Progressive Metal / Doom Metal Origin: Brighton , England Earlier this year, I reviewed Ewigkeit's " Land of Fog 20/20 ReVision ". Now, as autumn is commencing there is a new release by James Fogarty  ( In the Woods... / Jaldaboath / Old Forest ). Ewigkeit's newest work is a five-track EP lasting exactly 23 minutes. On "23" Ewigkeit sounds a lot different that on recent works. The music is still very progressive but a bit less experimental. Also, the Black Metal theme have almost completely been abandoned on this EP. Instead, Fogarty  adds lots of elements from Doom Metal and Stoner Rock to the musical atmosphere on "23". Speaking of Doom Metal, the opening track 'Bring the Eschaton' (video above) speaks volumes. With this powerful track Ewigkeit sets the pace fot the EP: massive, heavy and nihilistic Prog Metal

Single Review: Evil Saints - Siege of Caffa (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Evil Saints   Evil Saints - Siege of Caffa Release: September 11, 2020 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 07:33 Genre: Death Metal / Thrash Metal Origin: Phoenix (Arizona) , USA Isaac  (guitar, bass, vocals) and Reade  (drums, vocals) are Evil Saints. The Arizonan duo's second single "Siege of Caffa" is a seven-minute grooving Death and Thrash Metal attrition. The self-recorded and self-released single deals with the first use of biological weapons known to historians. The municipality of Caffa is nowadays known as Feodossija and can be found on the peninsula of Crimea. The song could use some more variation in my opinion. Given the fact that it is rather long, it appears a little monotonous. Might be, this is a stylistic device to emphasize the horrorrs of the siege. But especially when you listen to the song more than once in a row, it is pretty hard to tell whether you listened to it twice, thrice or even more often. A heavily grooving riff is

Album Review: Honeybadger - Pleasure Delayer (2020)

Picture Credit: Honeybadger Artwork: A. D. Visions Honeybadger - Pleasure Delayer Release: September 18, 2020 (Digital), November 01, 2020 (Vinyl) Label: Made of Stone Recordings Format: Vinyl / Digital Length: 34:05 Genre: Heavy Rock / Desert Rock Origin: Athens , Greece I must say, I am really delighted with the amount of great music I receive from Greece. Today, another awesome band from the southern European country will be reviewed. Let me introduce you Honeybadger, a quartet from Athens. Dimitris   Vardoulakis  (vocals and guitars), Dimitris Giannakopoulos  (guitar), Dimitris Yannopoulos  (bass), and Dimitr ... err Vaggelis Oikunomou  (drums and percussions) have recently released their first full-length album "Pleasure Delayer". Further support was given by Stephanie Stephanides  who wrote the lyrics for the songs 'Holler' and 'Good for Nothing'. Honeybadger were founded in 2014 and have so far published a four-track EP called " The Rain "

EP Review: River Stole Gods - Sky Architects (Deluxe Version) (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: River Stole Gods River Stole Gods - Sky Architects (Deluxe Edition) Release: September 18, 2020 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 21:23 Genre: Progressive Metalcore Origin: Düsseldorf , Germany "Sky Architects" was the first EP by Northrhine-Westphalian band River Stole Gods. After their recent release " Apparitions ", the quartet has prepared something special for their fan community. Their first EP has been completely remastered and is coming back as a deluxe edition. And to keep up to the word Deluxe, the Re-Issue of "Sky Architects" contains the brand new bonus track 'Amber Wastelands'. "Sky Architects (Deluxe Edition)" is defined by intense but melodic and progressive Metalcore. A soundscape rough like the sea on a stormy day is decorated with raw leads and powerful Djent. The atmosphere changes between harmony and disharmony while the versatile rhythms march forward. The vocals on top of the musical landsc

EP Review: Milk White Throat - Hierarchy (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Milk White Throat Milk White Throat - Hierarchy Release: September 18, 2020 Label: selfrelease Format: Digital Length: 21:04 Genre: Alternative Rock / Progressive Rock Origin: Brighton , England Brighton's trio Milk White Throat has gone through some change within the time of their existence. The newest product of their ongoing progress is the three-track EP "Hierarchy". Drummer Guillaume , Tom  on guitar and vocals ,  and  Brian  on bass and vocals present over twenty minutes of dark soulful and versatile music on this release. Predominantly, the music on "Hierarchy" can be listed under Alternative Rock. The trio creates heavy and gloomy atmospheres decorated by a smooth cover. But furthermore, Milk White Throat add a lot of Prog to their style here. Shifted rhythms and intelligent arrangements make the three songs very various and exciting. And finally, there is a certain influence of Melodic Hardcore. The title track especially reveals this

Album Review: Kings of the Valley - Kings of the Valley (2020)

Image
Picture Credit: Kings of the Valley Kings of the Valley - Kings of the Valley Release: September 18, 2020 Label: Wonderful & Strange Records / Stickman Records Format: CD / Digital Length: 40:40 Genre: Retro Prog Origin: Norway Rumour has it that Norway's quartet Kings of the Valley once said "Let's make Retro Prog great again". Whether that is true or not we can only guess. But I can comfort you that no walls haven been built since then. The Kings of the Valley are Christopher Roseth Sand (guitar and lead vocals), Esten Mortensen Holien  (drums, percussions, cymbals and vocals), Markus Margido Drazkowksi Tekusm  (bass and vocals), and  Øystein Megård (keyboard, guitar and vocals). And this album is their self-titled debut... sort of. Actually, three years ago the band released an EP that is called " Kings of the Valley ". And now, in the year 2020, there's their first full-length release which has the same title. "Kings of the Valley"
