Lower Saxony's Electric Mud might be known to many fans of Progressive Rock. And they still will be after their newest album "Quiet Days on Earth". And yet, something is different.
Nico Walser (guitars, keyboards, fretless bass, noises, drum programming, co-composing, audio engineering) and
Hagen Bretschneider (music conception, bass, video editing) are entering new territory on their newest album. Still proggy, "Quiet Days on Earth" contains influence from Neo Classic, Post Rock and some Ambient or Berlin School sounds.
Smooth soundscapes and opulent arrangements define the auditive experience on this album. Intelligent Prog Rock merges with atmospheric Post Rock. Meanwhile the basic mood is carried by a multilayer dreamy air of Electronica and Neo Classic. I actually would not call the music symphonic - and I cannot even exactly tell you why. It might be the predominance of the electronic noises.
Electric Mud's newest work is very meditative and relaxing. Although noises and glitches interfere with the smooth atmosphere, the comfortable mood is not being interrupted. This is music I want to listen to when travelling by plane the next time. Also, "Quiet Days on Earth" would perfectly fit as a soundtrack for a film; either a monumental movie or a documentary report on maybe the Arctic Sea or the genesis of our solar system.
The only comparison I can draw is a little similarity to my favourite Pink Floyd album, "A momentary Lapse of Reason". Apart from that, "Quiet Days on Earth" is a unique and stunning album.
