"Nur was, ist die Frage." is the newest release by Bamberg's Screamo band Karina Kvist. The German title can be translated to "But what? That is the question". The position of the comma is crucial for the meaning here. If it was "Nur, was ist die Frage", it would mean "But what is the question?". And Karina Kvist have implemented some more intelligent plays on words.
The track 'Flucht wagen' for example means 'to risk a getaway'. Nevertheless, it is a homophone to 'Fluchtwagen' which means 'getway car'. And finally, 'Beide, ausgelöscht' can be translated to 'both of them, obliterated'. Without the comma that would be 'both of them are obliterated'. Yes, German is a weird language and therefore the linguistic part of this review shall now be over.
On five tracks the band from the gorgeous town in Upper Franconia plays soulful and powerful Sceamo. Melodic riffs and hard breaks accompany angrily screamed vocals. Those are some deliberating screams from the bottom of the lungs. The lyrics combine anger, frustration and the will to break out of stagnation and helplessness.
Yet, hope plays a central role, too. "Nur was, ist die Frage." is an empowering output that says "It cannot stay this way and it won't!". Karina Kvist scream for progress and change. This is the music to listen to when you need to rediscover your own strength and the power to improve your own situation.
