It might have become a tradition that every November I review a new release by Zement. The (Neo-) Krautrock duo from Würzburg and Nuremberg took some holiday in early 2020. That was back in the days when travelling unreservedly possible. Apparently, they enjoyed their free time "Unter Palmen" , which is German for "under palm trees". Here, they recorded three new improvised tracks. And that is exactly what you are about to hear on this tape, pure and unaltered since there are no overdubs.
Those of you who knew Zement before will realize that "Unter Palmen" marks a strong progression in the sound of the band. Their first two albums "Werk" and "Klinker" were mostly defined by hovering and trancy (Neo-) Krautrock. The newest tape is still highly psychedelic. Nevertheless, Zement have become a lot more experimental in their style. Metres, rhythms and arrangements on this release are very avantgarde and coined by beautiful insanity.
Zement create huge and colourful spirals of sound that tear the audience into a caleidoscope of warmth and trance. Compared to older releases, the duo has adapted a new form of psychedelia. They abandoned the steril spheres of cement deserts and advanced into a wild and gorgeous jungle. Thus, the tape feels like a mind-expanding séance in South Asian spheres.
The three titles of the tape speak for the appropriation towards nature, too. Besides the title track 'Unter Palmen' ('under palm trees'), the tape's B-Side features 'Am Strand' ('at the beach') and 'Fernweh' ('wanderlust' / 'travel lust'). In times when travelling is a bit complicated, this cassette is the perfect chance to do some holiday and still apply to the rules of social distancing.
