Evoking Winds is a rare breed, a band that indulges us with new albums once in a couple of years, but consistently reminds of the caliber and level they operate on. This time we are having a whole LP of Heroes of Might and Magic soundtracks, reimagined and revisited - still capturing the bands original creative taste and paying respect to the videogame that influenced it in many ways.

The album includes cover versions of the classic themes from the second and third parts of the legendary turn based strategy - and it sure is some dark magic. The release works as an instant time travelling device, the capsule with data that immediately revives all the memories from your parents basement dungeon. The sweet poison of nostalgia grows on the listener and teleports straight to the times when everything was simple and the grass was greener, and everything like that. And as a game that aged well, production quality and added blakesque heaviness improves the experience a lot. Rather than being a quirky cheesy homage to the pop product that shaped many, it is a standalone artwork  worthy of listening.
Exquisite choice of tracks underlines the specific taste of the band, combining both most and less familiar ones. All of those are recorded in the branded style of Evoking Winds, with extreme production quality and perfectly balanced black and symphonic metals - keyboards are perfectly mixed, orchestrations are very vivid and organical, never falling out of the picture. Good to see a band that knows how stuff should sound.

I’m not a big fan of tributes, but The Heroes: HoMM II & III Metal Tribute really is a gem.
