The term longplayer was taken very serious by French band Carcariass. Their newest album "Planet Chaos" features over 70 minutes of heavy, melodic and progressive music. Thirteen track of which six are instrumentals are an intense output using almost all space available on a CD.

Carcariass create multi-layer soundscapes that merge impact from mainly three styles. Technical Death Metal riffs and rhythms form the heavy backbone of "Planet Chaos". Above that, classic features of Melodic Death Metal float through the spheres. And like a butterfly dancing from flower to flower, Progressive Metal leads complete the impressive atmosphere.

With almost half of the tracks being instrumentals, it is obvious that Carcariass foreground their versatile compositions to lyrical content. In the other seven tracks vocalist Jérôme draws the attention to his powerful voice. Still, the intensely chequered soundscape is not getting lost behind the growls and grunts. Instead, drummer Bertrand, bass player Raphaël, and Pascal on keys and guitars orchestrate themselves extraordinarily central.

"Planet Chaos" is a monstruous output that addresses listeners of Heavy and Prog Metal as well, as it will please fans of Melodic and Technical Death Metal. For my personal taste, the Melodic Death impact is a little too high. At the same time I really enjoy the highspeed sweep picks that accompany the brachial backgrounds.
