Guy Moses - Take me back (MR)
In his new song, Tel Aviv-based arist Guy Moses takes on different concepts of home. Therefore, the Israeli producer and sound engineer has invited two guest vocalists, anglophone singer Maya Johanna, and Sergio Braams who sings in Sranan Tongo, the language of Suriname. Their touching and emotional lines about home and distance are accompanied by Guy Moses' thrilling soundscapes. A warm bass meets chilly synth sounds on a dynamic Trip Hop beat, and thus 'Take me back' receives its tectonic movement.
McKenzie van Oss - Stereo to Heaven (MR)
Nevermind the stairway, this is McKenzie van Oss' 'Stereo to Heaven'. The artist and awarded ballett dancer from Raleigh, North Carolina has started writing and recording music during quarantine. The single on hand, 'Stereo to Heaven' is the newest release that marks the way to the first full-length that will be out in the third or fourth quarter of 2022. Together with her band, McKenzie van Oss presents a colourful, dynamic, and refreshing approach to Indie Rock with a certain Pop Punk vibe.
Dune Dogs - Citrus (MR)
The Dune Dogs from Massachusetts describe a situation that probably everybody knows. You are waiting for someone at the spot where you wanted to meet, and after some time it becomes obvious that they will not show up. Thus, you decide to walk home instead. On this very journey, the environment expresses itself stronger than ever, for example through the intense smell of citrus. In the Dune Dogs' single 'Citrus', this feeling is presented via easygoing and lightfooted Reggae, Surf Rock, and Indie Rock. Turn up the volume, smell the citrus.
9 o'clock nasty - Politic (MR)
It might not always be 9 o'clock somewhere, but it is definitely the time to be nasty somewhere. And thus, Leicester's 9 o'clock nasty celebrate the new year by releasing their latest EP "Politic". The three-track EP is opened by the dark and atmospheric Post Punk anthem 'King Thing'. The second track 'Get into them Part 1' is a brutal mix of Horror Punk, Death Rap, and nightmares, until it suddenly and seemlessly turns into the colourful Brit Pop hymn 'Get into them Part 2'. The theme stays the same, and the message is clear: 'Get into them and fuck them up'. Happy new year! 9 o'clock nasty are not, they have never been away. And that is just awesome!
Guided Meditation Doomjazz - Limitless Possibility (MR)
Blaise the Seeker, also known as J Blaise Gans has created these six tracks during jam sessions with Zane Andrews, and Mathew Doeckel. The result is a 45-minute release that can be used for meditation, for selfcare, for colouring, for reflection, or just for relaxation. On the bandcamp page you can also order therapy colouring books. Welcome to a sonic world where there are no limits, no boundaries, no pain, and where the mind is free.
Widowspeak - Everything is simple (MR)
'Everything is simple 'till it's not'. With this single, Molly and Rob, also known as Widowspeak from New York, present the first song off their sixth album "The Jacket". Smooth and gentle tunes waver between Shoegaze and Dream Pop and from time to time the dark melancholic heritage of Joy Division-like Post Punk shines through. And do not forget about the Country sound that makes the duo's sound so unique. Widowspeak's "The Jacket" is a sonic narrative that will be available on MC, CD, and LP via Captured Tracks this March.
Oh Hiroshima - Humane (MR)
More Shoegaze-influenced sound can be expected from Sweden's Post Rock duo Oh Hiroshima. In March, they will release their next album "Myriad" which follows their third full-length release "Oscillation"(2019). The first single 'Humane' presents a very progressive and industrial approach to Post Rock. The sound is both triumphant and dystopian. The album will be out via Napalm Records on March 04, 2022, and lets the listeners dive into the fantastic sonic universe of Oh Hiroshima another time.
Abraham - Fear Overthrown (MR)
Speaking of dystopian soundscapes, Abraham from Swiss town Lausanne have also announced a new album: "Débris de mondes perdus" (French: "Debris from forgotten worlds") will be released by Pelagic Records on February 25, 2022. The first single off the new album gives us a nice of preview of the dark narratives we are about to encounter once the album is out. By merging Post Metal and Post Hardcore with Black Metal and Sludge, the Swiss band lets their audience float through a meteorite swarm. Enjoy the cold and emptiness of a dead galaxy.
Ashinoa - Disguised in Orbit (MR)
We are not leaving space, yet. By the single 'Disguised in Orbit', Ashinoa from French city Lyon presents the first tones off their sophomore album "L'Orée" (French: "The Edge"). The album will be available on Fuzz Club Records, and it will most certainly let us explore realms that are far beyond the edges of human perception. Ashinoa stay tru to their Psych and Krautrock sound but add a lot of Electronica and Berliner Schule sound on 'Disguised in Orbit'.
Everson Poe - The Chamber of Blood
On February 25, 2022, Everson Poe from Chicago, Illinois will release their newest album "The Night Country" on Trepanation Recordings. With ten months time between the previous release "Grief" and "The Night Country", multiinstrumentalist Mae Shults has taken a longer break between two works than usual. And the thirteen-minute track 'The Chamber of Blood' already shows that it is was worth waiting for the fans. The first single is a diabolic masterpiece of Blackened Sludge and Doom Metal with a forceful coda.
Ella se Peló - Putx y qué? (MR)
My Spanish may not be very good, but as far as I can guess, the single's title is a gender neutral way of saying 'So what, bxtch'. The single contains the title track which is a full-force Hardcore Punk destroyer, and the rather calm or mid-tempo Punk Rock track 'A nadie hablar' ('Nobody talk'). Ella se Peló from Mexican city Guadalajara have hereby not only released an awesome Hardcore Punk release, "Putx y qué?" also is a powerful feminist anthem, and a clear rejection of false allies.
Mariya May - All of God's Children ain't free
If the song title rings a bell, you are probably thinking of the original track by Johnny Cash. Mariya May from Portland, Oregon reinterprets this classic by breathing new life into it. Dark and gloomy, melancholic and bittersweet, Blues and Folk join in to a soulful and yet desperate dance. Mariya May's version of 'All of God's Children ain't free' is a hypnotizing and beautifully glum anti-gospel.
Pelkkä Poutanen - Pyhä veri vuotaa (MR)
A blasphemous cover artwork and a Finnish title that translates to "Holy Blood is Leaking" may quickly raise the assumption that the album on hand by Finnish artist Pelkkä Poutanen is to be located somewhere under Black Metal or related genres. But the artist is surprising us with highly experimental and progressive Folk Rock that mixes with music from all continents and ages. Pelkkä Poutanen from Tampere present 45 minutes of colourful images, kaleidoscopic mirrorings, and plenty of surprises.
Écluse - La Mort du Scaphandrier
Maxime Gangné (guitar, bass, drums), David Caron-Proulx (guitar), and Mathieu Drolet (vocals) are three members of the Canadian online collective Écluse (French: Lock). Québécois label Les Disques Rabat-Joie presents their latest single 'La Mort du Scaphandrier' ('The diver's death'). The death from apnoea in the depths of the water is musicked via powerful, ultrafast, emotional, and merciless Screamo.
Infected Rain - Ecdysis (MR)
And then, to finish this issue of FreshMango, there is "Ecdysis", the newest album by Infected Rain from Chisinau, Moldova. For more than a decade the band has provided us with finest Hardcore-influenced Prog Metal, melodic choruses, and a powerful Nu Metal impact. The new album features a dozen tracks and almost one hour of Metal that is ready to wreck city blocks. On "Ecdysis", Infected Rain combine the dark and destructive power of early-2000s Alternative and Nu Metal, spice it up with the rage of (Post) Hardcore, and finally decorate it with intelligent Prog themes. This is the recipe that makes the album become an aspirant for album of the year already.
