Shady Oaks - Numb (MR)
(03:46, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 13/05/2022)
Shady Oaks from Denver, Colorado have experienced a rocket start into the ears and hearts of Indie and Blues Rock lovers since the band's founding in 2019. Now, Ty (vocals and guitar), Isaac (guitar and vocals), Jonah (drums), Brendan (bass) and Loren (vocals) have shown that they have not sustained a bit of this launch's fire. On the contrary, with their latest single 'Numb', the band from the Pacific Northwest has even notched up their performances many times over.
The song deals with emotional numbness and it has been written by lead vocalist Ty. 'Numb' begins with an atmospheric intro that is driven by a massively rolling bass. As the vocals kick in, Shady Oaks create a vast soundscape that reaches from Blues and Heavy Psych to body-moving Alternative Rock. Thus, Shady Oaks put up their tents in 'Numb' somewhere between Daily Thompson, The White Stripes, and Nirvana. And with joyful ease they present an anthemic banger that is simultaneously emotional and motivating.
Birdeatsbaby - Ribbons (MR)
(06:02, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 06/06/2022)
The single 'Ribbons' marks the kick-off to the promo phase for Birdeatsbaby's upcoming longplayer "HEX". Anna, Hana, Mishkin and Garry are inviting their listeners into a dark and fantastic sphere of occultism, magic and liminal experience. The band from London and Brighton caress their audience with comforting but gloomy sounds and the gentle movement of a lullaby. Yet, the swinging motions and the orchestral Prog Rock soundscape slowly but steadily move downwards into a dark and enchanted dream land.
Full of grace and elegance, the progresive and yet heavy, gloomy but still deeply fascinating soundscape paints fantastic images on the mental cinema screen. Fairies and demons dance with each other while light and dark merge in a forceful vortex of dreams and witchcraft.
Teen Mortgage - Valley (MR)
(04:53, Single, Digital, King Pizza Records, 29/06/2022)
Teen Mortgage's award-winning EP "Smoked" is mostly known for its merciless Punk Rock and Hardcore sounds. Without doubt, the Wammie for Best Punk Album is well deserved. Nevertheless, the EP contains a track that needs more attention since it has a very outstanding sound.
The tape's final track 'Valley' has now received its own music video which helps us undertaking a closer listening session of this stunning track by the duo from Washington, D.C.
It is heavy and psychedelic soundscape that Teen Mortgage present here when the invite us into the 'Valley'. A heavyweight drum rhythm steadily marches through the eponymous valley with heavy boots while a ton of colourful sound layers hover above. And thus, Teen Mortgage create the sonic image of a triple rainbow emerging from a deep canyon, spreading joy, hallucinations, and psychedelic trips. So, turn up your volume and dive in.
10,000 Years - III (MR)
(46:10, Album, Cassette/CD/Digital, Olde Magick Records/Interstellar Smoke Records/Death Valley Records, 24/06/2022)
On their third longplayer "III", the trio from Swedish town Västerås continues the narrative that was told on the previous albums. The quest of the space vessel Albatross continues. While the crew is working on repairing their ship to finally fly back home through the rift in the space-time continuum, new troubles arise. The Green King who was introduced in the story earlier has mobilized his forces as he wants to prevent the Albatross from traveling home and restoring order in the universe.
This fantastic tale of Science Fiction is told on atmospheric and stunningly psychedelic Doom, Sludge, and Space Metal sounds. The story's third part is by far the strongest one music-wise. 10,000 Years entertain their audience with versatile and thrilling heavy sounds - no matter if you follow the narrative or not.
Enphin - End Cut (MR)
(63:32, Album, Vinyl/CD/Digital, Pelagic Records, 24/06/2022)
The fifteen-track full-length release "End Cut" is the sixth album by Mr Peter Hayden, also known as Enphin - an artist from Finland we only know as much as needed about.
On "End Cut", Enphin take their audience on a journey to spaces that are not as remote as they may appear. It is a post-apocalyptic scenario the listeners find themselves in when diving into the cold and atmospheric sonic landscapes. Yet, the environment seems familiar as if it was not a trip to remote planets but to Earth. Between rubble, darkness, and the remains of what used to be a civilization, the exploration commences. Enphin are not going so far discovering what has been spared on the surface of the destroyed planet. Instead, the gaze is set upon the inside, the soul and the mind.
This impressive depiction of mental health in a post-apocalyptic narrative is told in an idiosyncratic way: Enphin let Doom Metal and Industrial clash so that at their point of impact, these two harsh genres create something soulful, emotional, and very fragile.
Debakel - Es bleibt kalt (MR)
(02:36, Single, Digital, Rookie Records/The Orchard, 01/07/2022)
'Es bleibt kalt' (German: 'It remains cold') is the first single by Cologne-based duo Debakel. The band consists of two legends in German Punk, Indie, Hardcore, and Wave. Michi is known for being with NEIN! NEIN! NEIN!, Knigge + Krust, or Koeter, while Thilo has been with Genepool and Illegale Farben.
And now, a new chapter begins: this is Debakel. Dynamic Wave Punk on freezing synthie drums, melancholic views on life, people, and society, and that somewhat depressed but still snotty 1980s Punk Rock attitude that says "Fuck off, we're still here". There will be more music from Debakel, and we can all be very excited about that.
