Album Review: El Jefazo - Simbiosis (2020)

For those who speak Spanish as well as I do, El Jefazo can be translated to "the boss". The title of their second album "Simbiosis" does not need further translation, I guess. Their style though is called "Rock Pesado", or Heavy Rock in English. El Jefazo are a three piece band from Peruvian capital Lima. Their members are guitar player player Bruno Sánchez, bass player Carlos French and drummer Renán Monzón.
As you might have derived from the line up, El Jefazo play pure Instrumental music. Their style is a heavy and various version of powerful Stoner Rock without any vocals. Are the voices missing? Not at all. The chequered soundscapes created on "Simbiosis" by the trio from Lima are stunning enough to stand alone.
Instead of simple structures made of verses, bridges and choruses, El Jefazo build wholesome spheres of sound and intense imagination. Each song follows a basic foundation that is being adapted and modified like in a fantastic jam session. Motifs and themes are being looped and altered until they smoothly float into the next level. These beautiful structures make the music on "Simbiosis" extremely diverting and entertaining.
Sound-wise El Jefazo also put a lot of effort in creating a versatile experience for all ears. Creaking crunch and fuzz sounds join an uptempo dance with warm sounding Blues riffs, and brachial Heavy Rock achieve gorgeous decoration by high-tone Heavy Metal leads. This chequered soundscape is based on the massively powerful and driving rhythms as a solid backbone.
"Simbiosis" was released in January 2020 via Nécio Records on vinyl and as a digital copy. If you love intense Instrumental Stoner Rock such as Rotor or Astral Kompakt, you will definitely love El Jefazo.
