Compilation Review: Dugu - Nausea Skeleton Abyss (2019)
It's time for another compilation and for another premiere on MangoWave.
Dugu (or Dugu666) are the first band from the Peoples Republic of China ever on my blog. The quintet has dedicated themselves to ultrafast Death and Thrash Metal.
The music scene in China is a sphere I hardly have any knowledge of. That might be due to the reason that the social media I mostly use is not that easy to attain in China. Also, I hardly use Chinese social media. I think, I once had an account on Weibo, but that's it.
Anyways, after Oi! Band MiSanDao and Sludge/Doom Band Never Before here's another band from China I am getting to know: Dugu!
The compilation "Nausea Skeleton Abyss" is a 75-minute powerload of highspeed Thrash Metal with plenty of Death Metal influence. It contains all three cassettes the band has released before and is available via Awakening Records since November 2019.
Recordings and production are rather LoFi, but still sounds pretty badass. Dugu are going full throttle on each of their songs and play a brutal version of early-day Thrash Metal with pentatonic leads that could be of either Oriental or East Asian origin.
The lyrics are hoarsely shouted and growled in English language. Same as beats and riffing vocalist Gut does not slow down at all. Despite the raw production it is obvious that Dugu know how to play their instruments. Instead of toneless thrashing these are some demanding and intelligent arrangements. That makes me wish the quality was better even more. But, hey it's an underground production. And it's a really good one!
The compilation contains 18 songs of which five are cover versions (Morbid Saint, Incubus, Slaughter, MX, Poison). If you want to find out more about Dugu you can check their Bandcamp profile or their Xiami profile (for those of you who speak Chinese).
I have got three reasons for you why buying that CD is a good thing:
1 Dugu really are a very good and high-class Thrash Metal band with unique sound,
2 Support underground scenes,
3 Do you have a Chinese Thrash Metal CD in your collection, yet? Even if you do, this one will fit your collection very well.
