Dresda Code - Ecopolis (MR)
(43:47, Album, Digital, Planet Q Productions, 26/03/2022)
Dresda Code were formed fifteen years ago in Italian city Napoli (or Naples if you prefer the English name). Two EPs, "From the Forest" (2014) and "As the Ocean Disappears" (2018) have marked the band's progress so far. Now with "Ecopolis", Vincenzo, Matteo, Simone, and Alessandro present their first full-length release. On seven tracks, Dresda Code provide us with a unique approach to styles between Thrash Metal, Prog Metal, some folkloristic harmonies, and a secret ingredient that keeps soft and hard parts together like super glue. Headbangig attacks and intelligent song structures accompany the band's vision of a cleaner, healthier, and more peaceful planet.
UFO Över Lappland - Spökraketer (MR)
(37:14, Album, Vinyl/Cassette/CD/Digital, Burnt Toast Vinyl, 29/04/2022)
Stargazers wipe your telescopes' lenses, space captains fasten your seatbelts, and kraut gardners sharpen your sickles - and everyone else open your minds up wide. The album on hand might be one of the greatest intergalactic discoveries since the short visit of Oumuamua (and I am not only talking about the fantastic album by Daily Thompson).
UFO Över Lappland are quartet from my hometown's partner city Umeå in Northern Sweden. Their second album "Spökraketer" (Swedish: "Ghost Rockets") is a wholesome journey to the edges of the universe - and way beyond. Stoically rolling Krautrock deactivates the gravity while gorgeous Space and Psychedelic Rock themes paint the most colourful images of interstellar constructs. A certain Post Rock trace shows up from time to time, emphasizing the vast enormity of space.
This is huge!
WolfWolf & The Tuzemak Orchestra - WolfWolf & The Tuzemak Orchestra (MR)
(22:24, Mini-Album, Vinyl/CD/Digital, Luxnoise, 29/04/2022)
Normally Mr Wolf (vocals, drums) and Mr Wolf (guitar) are a Garage Punk duo. Since the pandemic was a time for change and experiments, the two musicians from Swiss city Lucerne have gathered a wolfpack around them which consists of Jessie Wezel (vocals on 'Lucifer'), Simon Peterman (trombone), Samuel Blättler (trumpet), Gasguzzler (bass), and Blind Banjo Aregger (banjo, guitar). Together they are WolfWolf & The Tuzemak Orchestra. Their self-titled mini-album is a twenty-minute party that sounds like P Paul Fenech joined forces with Goran Bregović and Alexandra Zerner after the consumption of three jerrycans of tuzemák: Garage Punk del Muerte Vampire Trash Jazz. Живјели!
Zombie Rodeo - The Eyes Are Set Upon You (MR)
(23:04, EP, Digital, Inverse Records, 29/04/2022)
After a six-years hiatus, Zombie Rode from Finnish capital are back with a new EP and a slimmed-down line-up. Now a quartet, Mikko Mustonen, Mikko Puhakka, Mika Rissanen, and Miika Partonen present their rediscovered sound that goes far beyond the realms of Stoner Metal. The EP's thrilling arc of suspense builts up plenty of tension during the first half until the brutally grooving 'Night's Jackal Howl' rages with the force of a thunderstorm. The following song' Unspeakable Fathoms' then is a set of infernal sweeping blows until the final track 'The Burning Wasteland' calmly closes the narrative.
Black Sasquatch - Believe (MR)
(18:45, EP, CD/Digital, iNC Records, 06/05/2022)
Nashport, Ohio's most famous bigfoot experts, the Garage and Heavy Punk Metal band Black Sasquatch is back with their latest EP "Believe". And whatever you believe in, if Bigfoot was ever seen skateboarding, then they most likely listened to Black Sasquatch!
The EP begins with 'Tiger Tale', the true story of the Zanesville Animal Massacre in Zanesville, OH, in 2011. The second track, previously released single 'Infected' is a good old zombie film tune. The EP's biggest surprise is its longest track 'I Believe' which begins as a bittersweet Rock ballad which then implodes into a dynamic Skate Punk hymn. 'Robotic Overlords' was also release as a single earlier and it deals with a dystopian future in which humankind has been subdued by the machines. And finally, the 'Ode to the Grassmann' might be the most beautiful love song ever written for Bigfoot.
Green Hog Band - Crypt of Doom (MR)
(44:39, Album, CD/Digital, The Swamp Records, 01/05/2022)
Less than two years ago, the Green Hog Band's debut album "Dogs from Hell" left nothing behind but burning wastelands and probably smouldered-out spliffs. And here they are again, the raging Stoner Doom trio from New York City, inviting us to enter the "Crypt of Doom". After the heavy and slow introduction 'Dragon', Green Hog Band let the wild ride begin. Their doomed and stoned sound comes with plenty of psychedelic features, unexpected speed runs, and a serious Krautrock impact - or maybe Kraut Doom. The album "Crypt of Doom" is the soundtrack to the nightmare you want to revisit.
The Best Around - Didn't come here to count 'em (MR)
(04:40, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 04/05/2022)
This is the song that you party playlist was short of. Cosmic Americana band The Best Around present a three-chapter tale of a person that knows one thing for sure: drinks are not made for counting them, but once you consume them the fun begins.
The Best Around's party anthem consists of three episodes in which our nameless protagonist tells that their mission was not to count the drinks but to drink them. The interrogating antagonists are the main character's wife, a police officer, and a judge.
The Cosmic Americana that The Best Around create to tell their story is the kind of dynamic party sound that makes your beverage splash over. Important note: there are many good reasons for not getting drunk. You can also enjoy this fantastic song being sober.
Depressed Mode - A Decade of Silence (MR)
(66:10, Album, CD/Digital, Inverse Records, 06/05/2022)
On their third longplayer, Depressed Mode from Finnish Pori provide their audience with more than one hour of atmospheric and orchestral Metal. The quartet serves a vast field reaching from Melodic Death Metal over Doom Metal to Symphonic Metal. The song 'Endless November' especially proves the imposant and thick impact of this dark cocktail, which i also thanks to the impressive guest vocals by Veronica Bordacchini.
In nine acts, the band around Otto Salonen orchestrates a stunning musical play that tells of darkness, cold, and loneliness.
