Compilation Review: 2 Years of Dependency (2014)
Moscow-based [addicted label] / No Name Recordz celebrated their second anniversairy back in 2014 by releasing a 26-track compilation containing songs by 21 of their artists. For lovers of Psychedelic, Experimental and Avant-Garde music, this compilation is a great chance to look East.
01 The Grand Astoria - Welcome to the Club / Then You Win (06:47):
The opener is a double track by The Grand Astoria from Saint Petersburg. 'Welcome to the Club' is a jolly Country song, perfect for commencing such a huge compilation. After a break 'Then You Win' kicks in. A Heavy Metal intro leads into fuzzy Indie Rock and Alternative that roll towards the eardrums.
02 Matushka - Location (14:20):
Matushka commence their longtrack 'Location' by an intense Acid introduction. Their psychedelic jam moves through misty fields and wide spaces of mysterious tunes. Half way through the song the intensity is increasing massively until the last fog is cleared. An enormous psychedelic Space Jam erupts. And every time you think the song has reached its climax, the band from Saint Petersburg adds another layer.
04 Evil Bear Boris - Geheimnisse des Dritten Reichs (06:30):
The band from Moscow plays a gloomy version of Symphonic Rock. 'Geheimnisse des Dritten Reichs' (German for 'Secrets of the Third Reich') is lead by a powerful choir and intense symphonic arrangement. Dark but yet triumphant the instrumental song creates a powerful aura situated between Rock and Classic.
05 Stone Cold Boys - Christmas Murderer (07:23):
Next up are Moscow's Stone Cold Boys. Somewhere between Stoner Rock, Alternative and Shoegaze the band has set up their domicile. Aggrieving 90s Rock meets Fuzz and Grunge. 'Christmas Murderer' can be described by Josh Homme and The Melvins covering The Velvet Underground. The final part is getting funky as heck.
06 Flower in my Lung - Track_01 (03:28):
At first I thought this song was mistagged, but it is actually called 'Track_01'. The opener of Flower in my Lung's selftitled album is a strong Post Rock song. Soft Ambient passages rise up to melancholic but intense attacks. As an extraordinary feature the rhythm guitar in the massive Post Rock parts is completely undistorted which creates a unique and beautiful sound.
07 Thy Grave - Anhedonia (14:06):
Thy Grave from Moscow are really slowing it down. Sludge, Doom Metal and Drone are the main ingredients for their track 'Anhedonia'. This is a highly depressing and claustrophobic atmosphere the band creates. How else should you perform a track named after the incapability to fell joy? I may experience some similiarities to Black Shape of Nexus or Saturndust.
08 Бром - Ветошь (09:42):
Another clear cut. Бром jump in with some sophisticated Avant-Garde Jazz. Hard to grasp and yet mesmerizing the band from Moscow creates a colourful Freakshow. Expect the unexpected and get crazy with this extraordinary Jazz tune. I see certain similarities to MOOP here.
09 Juice Oh Yeah - Krug (05:53):
After the jazzy intermission Juice Oh Yeah from Saint Petersburg add to the momentum again. Progressive, Psychedelic Garage and Stoner Rock make the biggest influence on this one. And once the vocals begin, it could be a Russian Folk song as well. Across the genres, continents and styles Juice Oh Yeah create a powerful and impressive experimental sound.
10 Detieti - Yaush Tadaush (08:27):
It begins as a massive Stoner Rock song, then goes Funk and Jazz, bridges with some scratches and then turns into a progressive cacophony. Detieti from Moscow play a very unique form of Art Rock that can hardly be described. The wild mixture is perfect for the next Freakshow party and resembles The Mothers of Invention and also ni.
11 Spaceking - 54 (03:47):
Space Rock? Hm, not really. I'd rather call this Progressive Doom Metal. Saint Petersburg's Spaceking create a strong instrumental soundscape with heavily rolling riffs and beautiful breaks. Massive Stoner Rock goes along with heavy Doom Metal motifs and sophisticated Prog Rock content.
12 Soom - Крізь трембіту до легень і навпаки [hypnotic mix] (06:51):
Not to be confused with German Thrash Metal band Sodom, Soom from Kharkiv play Psychedelic Noise and Doom. The attribute that fits best here, is hypnotizing. It hits you like a huge bong and makes your body and soul go different ways for at least seven minutes. In some parts this might remind of Electric Wizard.
13 Рудольф - Хор (01:50):
Another freaky song. Рудольф mix Math Rock with Noise, Punk Rock and sheer madness. It sounds like a pure cacophony first. But I guess, it sounds exactly the way it should do. It is definitely fun listening to this even though I am struggling with comprehension here.
14 The Grand Astoria - Deathmarch (05:26):
Another one by The Grand Astoria. Heavy riffing, oriental scales and progressive breaks. This one is a real headbanger for lovers of brachial and versatile Stoner Rock. Also, it weren't The Grand Astoria if they didn't add a change in motif at the track's zenith.
15 The Mermaids of the Lipetsk Shed - Petrowizard (02:40):
Powerfully rolling Stoner Grunge at its best. A massive wall made of bass and brachial rhythms moves this song forward. The Mermaids of the Lipetsk Shed make no compromise and it appears that they don't take prisoners. This is super intense.
16 Sound of Ground - Hey Hobo! (03:09):
More heavy Stoner Rock from Moscow. But Sound of Ground have more impact by Desert Rock and Funk.Light funky licks and brutally deep riffs interchange on this one. En plus there is a lot of Fuzz. Sound of Ground play the massively moving and rolling Desert Rock for fans of acts such as Fu Manchu or Hermano.
17 The Grand Astoria - Punkadelia Supreme (07:17):
And a third one by The Grand Astoria. On the title track from their 2013 album they commence melodically and softly until the first break kicks in. Now heavy Stoner Rock is the main theme. With some Hard Rock impact the song crashes on until it psychedelically fades out. What a masterpiece!
18 I Will Kill Chita - Risk (03:02):
Slowing it down a little, I Will Kill Chita jump in with another Post Rock and Indie Rock track. 'Risk' is a very melodic track to close your eyes to. Revery is added by the symphonic backgrounds that emerge in bridge in the middle of the song. This really is some gorgeous instrumental Post Rock.
19 Astrodiver - Black Dose Mistress (07:22):
Astrodiver play that Pink Floyd-influenced Space- and Psychedelic Rock. 'Black Dose Mistress' is a beautiful journey through a colourful cosmos. Lean back, fasten your seatbelts and explore the universe with all its beauty and silence. But beware for this is not a silent vessel you're travelling on. Astrodiver know how to increase the speed to warp drive.
20 Diazepam - Sinking (07:24):
With Diazepam there is one American band on the compilation who recorded this song for a split with Pressor and Soom. Sinking' is a deep, brutal and intense Sludge song. Lovers of rusty, fuzzy Sludge Doom will have a lot of fun with this one.
21 Evil Bear Boris - The Music Will Play in Your House But You Won't Hear It [in action] (04:07):
And another by Evil Bear Boris. The song kicks in with savage noises and a multitude of instruments. Almost half way through the band slides into some kind of Symphonic Stoner Rock comparable to Om or Ararat.
22 Torf - Galicia shall rise again... (05:00):
Lviv-based band Torf play an interesting mix of Sludge and Southern Rock. Harsh growls, halting and heavy riffing goes along with the sound of the Southern States of the USA. This is the music for the stoned rednecks from Alabama to Lviv.
23 Рудольф - Лом (01:43):
And another one by the Math Rock Freaks Рудольф. Still amazing, still hard to describe. This songs contains a siren.
24 Камни - Небо (13:00):
Bring on the Fuzz! Moscow's Камни present a 13-minute longtrack of mesmerizing Psychedelic Rock. Once you're caught in this soundscape you can just let yourself go and dive into yourself. Powerful Psychedelic Rock at its best.
25 The Damn Ol' Bones - Straight Story / Run Gunner (06:57):
The trio from Lipetsk plays some Heavy Blues Rock on their two tracks. After the instrumental opener 'Straight Story', 'Run Gunner' whirls around like a derwish and presents itself as a massive Blues track.
26 Fumantia Mauris - Bastard Sunn (08:33):
The compilation ends with the intense Psychedelic and Stoner Doom song by Kharkiv's Fumantia Mauris. Mesmerizing, noisy and shoegazy sounds merge with heavy Doom air. Let this one fade out and you know you discovered a whole new world of Psychedelia.

03 Pressor - Royal Witch [Cthulhu Mix] (11:59):
A clear cut is made by Kostroma-based band Pressor. Aggrieving Doom Metal and Sludge slowly minces through a dark landscape. Similarities to EyeHateGod or Dopethrone cannot be negated. Nevertheless the Horror created by Pressor has its idiosyncratic experimental impacts.
04 Evil Bear Boris - Geheimnisse des Dritten Reichs (06:30):
