The 71st Meridian West crosses places such as Greenland's Herbert Island, the densely populated West Indian island of Hispaniola, Chilean Aracena Island, or the disputed Alexander Island in Antarctica. Also, the 71st Meridian passes the harbour of Massachusetts' history-charged city Boston. This vibrant place in New England is home to the gifted artist Giuseppe Paradiso who has created the musical project Meridian 71 in 2012. Celebrating their ten-year anniversairy, Meridian 71 have recently released their third longplayer "Parallell Dimensions" which is available on CD and as a digital copy via Ubuntu Music.
For a bit more than half an hour and an six songs, Giuseppe Paradiso and his talented guests present a heart-warming and sophisticated sound from one united world - united in love for arts, music, and culture. The line-up on "Parallel Dimensions" consists of:
Giuseppe Paradiso - drums percussions, electronics, and vocals on 'Tony',
Mark Zaleski - also sax, soprano sax, clarinet,
Phil Sargent - electric guitar,
Utar Artun - piano, keys,
James Hazlewood-Dale - upright bass, electric bass, fretless bass,
Malick Ngom - sabar drums and percussion on 'Kaizen', 'Parallel Dimensions' and 'Tony', vocals on 'Tony'.
The sound provided by Paradiso's Meridian 71 is an eclectic and wholesome fusion of styles. And here, the world Fusion does not only stand for an artistic combination of Jazz, Funk, and Blues. Furthermore, "Parallel Dimensions" is a masterfully worked alloys of Afrobeat, Jazz, Klezmer, Groove, and ethnic ryhthms from at least five continents. Middle Eastern scales create a soothing heat as they hover above the psychedelic Jazz motifs while African and Caribbean rhythms move the listeners' whole body (and mind).
Thus, "Parallel Dimensions" is a musical celebration of the cultural variety that defines the vibrant cultural life of Boston. Giuseppe Paradiso and his guest musicians embrace the multi- and transcultural beauty that can be discovered in the streets and pubs of Boston.
The third full-length release by Giuseppe Paradiso & Meridian 71 is therefore a powerful and deeply emotive display of the potential of music and culture in our world. With eclectic and acidic Jazz as the album's main motor, the band sets the audience in a loveful trance and lets them celebrate the beauty of a united world.
As artistic and eclectic this album is, the music is very accessible and easily enchants the listeners' bodies and minds. The six-track release is a perfect sonic environment to enjoy oneself to. Rhythms and soundscapes allow the audience to express their feelings and emotions, and therefore from trancy teetering to eccentric dancing, "Parallel Dimensions" is the soundtrack for each physical reaction. So, turn up the volume and enjoy the moods that are getting prompted by the sounds.
