The Qwarks - Throne of your Grace (MR)
(02:43, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 15/04/2022)
After their recent sonic trip through the internet and the weird world of social media, The Qwarks from South English town Brighton present another fantastic musical tale. In the fictional narrative presented on some kind of Zappesque Progressive Noise Post Punk, the trio tells of a band that is seeking for gigs and support from a promoter. Knowing of their power, the promoter comfortably sits on their throne. The musicians now have to decide whether to follow the promoters' weird instructions, become their jesters, to receive their grace, or to stay true to their independet ideals. It may be a fictional story, but it is a story most artists will be able to relate to.
The Qwarks apparently took the harder road, and instead of becoming the umpteenth band that sounds like the same old same-old, they constantly develop their beautifully weird style. This powerful vortex of dark humour, psychedelic sounds and sophisticated songwriting is the first omen of their upcoming EP.
All Now - Principles (MR)
(02:58, Single, Digital, selfrelease, 04/02/2022)
All Now from Manchester, England are a new band that brings a very refreshing breeze to the spheres of contemporary Indie and Alternative Rock. The band's second single 'Principles' is a beautiful display of their emotional, melodic, and yet intense Rock sound that is infiltrated by sensual Post Hardcore motifs.
Hàn Gắn - Tragically Optimistic (MR)
(28:04, Album, Digital, Witchduck Records, 11/03/2022)
On their second full-length release "Tragically Optimistic", Hàn Gắn from Washington, D.C. take Post-genres to a whole new level. Post Punk, Post Rock, or Post Hardcore can certainly be found in the atmospheric and thrilling soundscapes created by the duo. And yet, Hàn Gắn add at least a couple of Post-s as prefixes as they let electrifying Wave sounds interfere with dystopian rock sounds, or when massive Hardcore breakdowns joyfully collapse above synthetic drums. Hàn Gắn's second album is the melancholic, heavy, and sensual sound for the next generation.
Taliesin - Faceless (MR)
(48:12, Album, Digital, selfrelease, 15/04/2022)
Taliesin from Australian capital Canberra have recorded this album eight years ago, and now it finally sees the light of the day. Powered by sophisticated Prog and crunchy Alternative Metal, the quintet presents the concept album about a person with prosopagnosia (face blindness). Taking this disposition for an excuse, the protagonist regards themself innocent of the series of murders they committed, and thus they blame their diagnosis for the deeds instead.
This album went through a maze of technical and finally pandemic-related hurdles. Now that it is finally available, fans of Heavy Prog can enjoy its whole beauty.
Carpet Waves - Inner Weapons (MR)
(22:51, EP, Digital, Waveland Records, 20/04/2022)
On their new EP "Inner Weapons", Carpet Waves from German towns Cologne, Düsseldorf and Wuppertal deal with merciless conflicts that are fought between the beliefs and attitudes of a person on the one hand and the reality of the outside world on the other. Gloomy and yet silken soft, the quartet lets Post Punk, Shoegaze and Dream Pop merge to a solid alloy of sensual Independent Rock music.
Seum - Blueberry Cash (MR)
(13:41, EP, Vinyl/CD/Digital, selfrelease, 20/04/2022)
Doom'n'Bass trio Seum from Québecois city Montreal have released a shiny new three-track EP. "Blueberry Cash" contains two tracks originally written during the "Winterized" sessions, and 'Hairy Muff'. The latter is a cover version of Lord Humungus, the former band of Seum vocalist Gaspard. On the first two songs, Seum present massive Sludgecore as hot as the blaze of a spliff lit up by infernal flames. The Lord Humungus covers is more bass-laden and doomy, and most certainly a brutal banger.
Noorvik - Hamartia (MR)
(68:45, Album, Vinyl/CD/Digital, Tonzonen Records, 22/04/2022)
Noorvik's sophomore album "Omission" was an absolute monolith of atmospheric and ice-cold Post Rock. Thus, the question may arise whether the band from German city can keep up with the expectations that a follow-up release brings. And the short version of the answer is yes, they can! Abandoning the realms of freezing oceans and the loneliness of the deep sea, Noorvik are now encountering the mythological spheres of the Greek underworld. As they encounter the depths of the 'Tartarus', Noorvik concern human chasms such as greed or narcicissm. The sonic journey is presented in the most versatile Noorvik sound in the band history. On "Hamartia", the instrumental band sounds more progressive, more psychedelic, heavier, and warmer than ever before.
Waste A Saint - Hypercarnivore (MR)
(37:45, Album, Cassette/CD/Digital, All Good Clean Records, 22/04/2022)
Quartet Waste A Saint from Trondheim, Norway has released their first full-length album "Hypercarnivore" after having published an EP and several singles before. The longplayer is a nine-track monster with red beams for eyes and lightning rods for horns. Proto Metal and Fuzz Rock join an erotic dance in the middle of a burning pentagram while the scenery is overshadowed by intense Soul.
Zane - She has Wings
(22:35, EP, Digital, Dejected, 22/04/2022)
Zane of Dejected from Salt Lake City, UT, USA presents an EP that is much more than just a collection of four songs. The 22-minute release is a therapeutic relief from frustration, anger, desolation, and isolation. As a result, a massively heavy and brutally destructive set of Sludge and Doom Metal anthems with a smooth Southern Metal impact were born. Despite its brutal and dark sounds, "She has Wings" is very deliberating and thus makes an excellent anti-anger session.
