It is a weird world we're living in, isn't it? And from time to time it almost appears as if we get used to all the chaos and all the desparation that defines the lives of most people. Fortunately, Newcastle's Crux have recently released their first EP "Death at the Cash Machine" which is a six-track status report of life on Earth anno 2021. The current situation including the battle against the pandemic, lockdowns, short time work, and further COVID-related aspects have found their way into the themes of course. But Crux go way further and include the issue of sexism and sexual violence, the rise of the incel culture, every-day madness, and the urge to drink and dance away one's problems.

On the A-Side, Crux present some dark and deep Post Punk that is laden with the gloomy mood of Cold War-times Post Punk. Dynamically and energetically, the quartet provides a sound that includes the tastes of Joy Division fans and lovers of 1990s Indie Rock likewise. As they put on tempo, the B-Side has a lot more Punk Rock to offer. In the tradition of 1980s British anarchist and nihilist music, Crux mix their dark soundscapes with some butt-kicking moshpit-ready Punk Rock tunes. And finally, the last track 'Agent Orange (+erased)' merges it all. Clockwork Orange-like synths hover above a grim Post Punk foundation that is ornated by massive Alternative Rock monoliths, while the anthemic chorus adds the Punk Rock attitude to the song. And thus, "Death at the Cash Machine" is a monster of a debut, and Crux are a band you should remember.
