Slowpoke are a trio from the capital of Northeast Canadian province Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John's. The sparsely populated and cold region has not appeared on my musical atlas until today, thus I am glad to introduce you to Adam Young (drums), Cameron Legge (guitar), and Ben Chapman-Smith (guitar, bass, vocals), as well as their guest musicians Al Yeti Bones and Gordon McCready who helped to make the selftitled debut album what it is.

The seven-track album is a powerful self-representation of the Canadian band formed in 2018. On 45 minutes Slowpoke provide us with a heavy "Here we are now, deal with it". The music can predominantly be categorized under the term Stoner Punk. Digging deeper, you could call it a non-compromise bastard of Motörhead, Black Sabbath, Amebix, Adrenalin O.D., and Dozer. Massive Sabbath Blues grinds on stenchy 80s Punk Rock and creates a psychedelic vortex. Fuzzy, heavy, and savage soundscapes form thrilling soundscapes to unite the stoners standing at the edge of the concert hall with the hardcore kids wearing themselves out in the moshpit.

Although Slowpoke may not have clearly and completely defined their own style yet, their selftitled debut album is a great presentation of what to expect from the trio in the future. The release is full of variety and surprises, and the band knows how to create tension in fuzzy Stoner Rock passages, and discharge it via raging Metal Punk attacks. Imagine a concert with these three musicians and Ohio's Black Sasquatch - this would be awesome!
