Rioghan is the solo project by Lapua's Rioghan Darcy. Formed in 2019, now the first EP "Blackened Sky" is out via Inverse Records. On four tracks the artists presents a versatile collection of different styles and genres. The two most consistent features are a smooth darkness that reminds of velvet, and the impressive voice by Rioghan Darcy.

It is therefore easier to review this EP song by song. The opening track 'Hollowness' (video above) is a calm and acoustic folk tune. Accompanied by piano and atmospheric synthetic sounds, Rioghan presents herself as a soulful singer and songwriter.
The second song 'Enough' (BC link below) however, is a powerful and massive mix of Prog Metal, Alternative Rock and Gothic. Driven by a heavy rhythm, Rioghan creates a rough and yet very melodic soundscape.
The Gothic influence is present on 'Whither' as well. Still, the song is rather boppy and could rather be located somewhere between soft Gothic Rock, Folk, and Synthwave.
And last but not least, with 'Corrupt' another folky singer and songwriter tune closes the album. Acoustic guitars and strings make this dark and yet colourful song a comforting sonic experience.
