LA's Victory Kid call themselves the answer to a question that has yet to be asked. Actually, I know a question that could be answered by naming Victory Kid: Is there still good Ska Punk out there? Yes, Ska Punk is a genre that I often struggle with since its last hype in the decade after the Millenium. There have alsways been a few bands that convinced me to not abandon that genre. Reel Big Fish, Hog Hoggidy Hog, The Busters (although, they're more Ska than Punk), Dallax, or Streetlight Manifesto and Catch22 are the main protagonists who still manage to merge Reggae, Ska and Punk Rock in a way that pleases the hearing. Starting today, I will add Victory Kid to that list.
The band's first LP "Discernation" is a dozen-track compilation containing Victory Kid's recent output. Thus, the EP trilogy "Illenials" (May 2018), "Thrillenials" (August 2018), and "Chillenials" (July 2021) is now available on one record. Vinyl and CD appear via SBÄM and are distributed via Broken Silence.
The formula to success mightsoung pretty eay. What makes the Ska Punk played by Victory Kid so catchy and dynamic can be described by a little play on words: it only takes addition of two letters to go from Ska Punk to Skate Punk. Unlike many bubblegum Ska Punk acts, Victory Kid play honest, autochthonous, and serious Pop Punk. Although there is a lot of coming-of-age content, sonic sunshine, and boppy melodies, "Discernation" is 123% better than the average teen-comedy-soundtrack Ska Punk release. Only the track 'Leaving New York' appears a little misplaced to me - or at least I cannot get to like it.
Ska Punk is alive! This vinyl record will look amazing on your turntables - not only during your next open air party.
Music from every post will stay in the MangoRotation playlist for 14 days.
