Mathilda Sundin is a member of Swedish band Fuck Frankie. Actually, it is not easy finding them online since I found a band with the same name from Chile and... porn. But on the YouTube channel by Mathilda (see links below), you will find some recordings. Anyways, this post is not about Fuck Frankie but about the acoustic Folk Punk project by Mathilda Sundin - here is Elvira Bira.

The term Folk Punk is often directly linked to Celtic Folk or Americana-influenced Punk Rock. But the term Folk Punk is a lot richer than these assumptions may make it appear. Elvira Bira's debut album "Vispunk" is a perfect example of a mix of Punk and folkloristic soundscapes apart from those common spheres. Mathilda, also known as Elvira Bira, creates stunning and dynamic sounds by merging Northern Folk with a snotty kiss-my-ass-attitude.

One could use the term Street Punk here but without referring to the dry and harsh music style related to Oi! Punk. Instead, "Vispunk" contains the kind of sound, you can listen to in the precincts, and it will make you stop doing what you were about to do, and have a drink while enjoying the sounds instead. The albums contains eleven tracks written by mastermind Mathilda Sundin who also played guitar the ukulele and sang the vocals. Further musicians featured on this album are Benjamin Ek (viola), Elin Olsson (flute), Peter Sundin (tuba), Charlie Andersson (guitar), and Orian Reinberg (drums).

If I had to describe this amazing acoustic Punk Rock album, this'd be my take:
Elvira Bira mix the sound of 1980s Swedish Punk Rock à la Ebba Grön with the folkloristic harmony of bands such as Lykantropi, spice it up with the snotty attitude as we know it from Berlin's Acht Eimer Hühnerherzen, and finally add the confidence of Pippilotta Viktualia Rullgardina Krusmynta Efraimsdotter Långstrump. If you don't know who the latter is, please look her up.

Music from every post will stay in the MangoRotation playlist for 14 days.
