Portland, Oregon seems to be a vibrant hotspot for Doom Metal, Stoner or Desert Rock, Psychedelic Rock and related genres. If you're interested in getting an insight in the local scene, I recommend you to listen to this compilation and its successor. Nevertheless, here's a band that did not appear on either of these two releases, and yet once more proves the smoky and apocalyptic potential of Portland's music scene: here is Breath!
Breath is a duo consisting of Steven O'Kelly (bass, vocals) and Ian Caton (drums, auxiliary percussion). On the track 'Observer' they get additional support by Rob Wrong who played the only guitar on the debut album "Primeval Transmission". Hence, you might already assume what to expect from the music presented by Breath. The drone is strong with the duo, and so are low tones.
Weedian wrote that Breath is a hot recommendation for fans of Yob, Sleep, or Om, and Ican only endorse to their words. Breath provide us with halting low.tempo marches, pitch-black psychedelia, and vocals like satanic sermons. The scratchy sounds of the bass is the central element of these five tracks. The percussive elements create quite a rapid movement despite the low tempo - the video above ('Battle for Harmonic Balance / Halls of Amenti') might be the perfect example for this.
Breath's debut is what I would call Doom Metal for adults. Stoner and Drone create an electric symbiosis that is dead serious and absolutely beautiful. "Primeval Transmission" is meditative, sedating, and darker than a solar eclipse.
