"Fil Rouge" (French for "Red String") is the first full-length release by Strasbourg's Another Five Minutes. But that does not mean that the Alsatian trio has been idle before. Their self-titled EP (2013) and the sophomore EP "Half Empty" (2015) were released on vinyl. Now, for the first proper album "Fil Rouge", Sébastian, Kevin and Florian have a cassette tape ready for their listeners.
Different to the album title, the lyrics on "Fil Rouge" are sung and screamed in English. The vocals come from three members of the band. Thus, there is a great variety from hoarse shouts, melodic chants and some half-spoken word sections. These vocals are accompanied by a rough and cold soundscape. Another Five Minutes play a soulful but tough mix of Post Hardcore, Screamo and Shoegaze.
"Fil Rouge" is atmospheric, melancholic, versatile in tempo and mood, and colourfully blinding. Each song on the album is like a snapshot showing an emotion or human interaction. Hence, listening to th album feels like browsing through old photographs and diving into the emotional sphere of each picture. Another Five Minutes provide us with exceptionally soulful and powerful Post Hardcore and Shoegaze. And after all, there is this special ingredient which often appears in French Hardcore or related music, and I cannot name it. But it is beautiful!
