The Art of
Now are new star in the colourful sky of Progressive and Alternative Metal. The
project from Mackay in Queensland, Australia debuts with their single “Love of
my Life” which is a deeply soulful and artistic piece of timeless and artistic sonic
work. The best way to describe it for me is by imagining that the project is an architect who is building a gorgeous house.
The backbone of the song is done by the drums which use shifted rhythms and plenty of intelligent fills to build up a dynamic scaffold for the song. The bass adds its warm and luscious tones to this construct and thus cements the musical atmosphere like solid finery. The paint job on this artistic building of sound is made by the guitars. Smooth and loungy tunes flow over the solid walls of sound like fresh paint on canvas. These jazzy tones lead into crunchy and heavy Prog Metal and therefore create colourful images full of joy and soulful passion. The variety of the sound of the two guitars is astonishing as they go from smooth and jazzy to massive Prog Metal. In the latter part of the song especially, the lead guitar begins hovering above the rhythm section. Here, you can hear licks that resemble Heavy Metal but also the scratchy sound of Modern Metal can be spotted. In general, all instruments manage to create a beautiful atmosphere influenced by a certain Post Rock ambient and then leading into the silky and comfortably dark air of Alternative Metal as it was famous in the Millennium era.
The final
decoration on this impressive sonic creation is done by the vocals. The passionate lyrics of “Love of my Life” are like a letter to a
lost love – a mournful reminder of happy times when a perfect match of love has
not parted yet. The powerful but smooth voice deals with
the reality that these perfect days are over. Referring to the image of the
song being a work of architecture, you can imagine convoluted letters being
painted on the walls between colourful images of flowers and clouds. On each
side of this lyric sheet, a person might stand, depicting the former lovers who
have now gone separate ways.
The Art of
Now have hereby made an amazing debut. Their song “Love of my Life” combines
the eclectic and artistic sounds of Progressive Metal with the soulful and dark
beauty of Alternative Metal. The versatile moods and structures of the song are
sheer timeless and have the potential to empower, to soothe, and to reflect.
The Art of Now are a hot tip for fans of Godsticks and Adema likewise.
