In my first shared flat I had a room mate who had a relative working for the ESA. Hence, he had a shirt saying "Space is cool", probably the best garment I have ever seen (Tobi, if you read this, hey mate, hope you're fine!). And yes, space is cool! Buy why is it so cool?
Well, space is fascinating. But in our times, it is predominantly an opportunity for a getaway, regarding how much we have screwed up our own planet. And this is one of the main aspects, the new album by Mainz' The Mountain King is about - leaving Earth and conquering new frontiers.

"The Smell of Stars and Vomit" is a 95-minute one-track release. Several plots about a fantastic odyssey away from our home planet merge into each other and create a gigantic post-apocalyptic narrative. It is the story about humantiy, about progress, development, transgression and evolution. What has the celestial body that we call home come to? What has humanity done to protect and sustain this place? And why does humanity have this tendency to screw things up? "The Smell of Stars and Vomit" is a coherent collection of thoughts on life and progress.

The post-apocalyptic atmosphere is musicked via mesmerizing Space Doom. More precisely, The Mountain King merges psychedelic Space Rock with Doom Metal and Drone. The soundscapes accompany the protagonist's thoughts and utterings with cold and atmospheric sonic expressions. The mood changes between defiance, hope, and desparation - just like evolution and progress on Earth, but here we are in space.

Eric McQueen - the sole member of The Mountain King - has once more created something completely new. After the concept album "Wicked Zen", he let go of brachial Doom sounds, and headed towards the relams of cosmic music. "The Smell of Stars and Vomit" is yet another masterpiece by the artist from Rhineland-Palatinate. Space is cool, Space is Doom, and this is the best output created by The Mountain King (so far).
