"Polaroid Malibu" is the first full-length release by Parisienne trio Echoplaine. Emmanuel Bœuf (guitar, vocals), Clément Matheron (bass), and Stéphane Vion (drums) have formed the band in 2018 after knowing each other for ages and playing in numerous other bands. In 2019, a self-titled three-track EP was the first proper release, and in 2020 the album was announced by the ex ante single "Beyoncé".
On ten tracks Echoplain sustain us with noisy, dark, halting and nihilistic Post Punk. The experimental approach shows some traces of 80s Goth or Wave combined with thoughtful but destructive energy of artists like Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft or Einstürzende Neubauten. And after all, "Polaroid Malibu" appears emotional and reflected.
Echoplain create imposant soundscapes of mid-tempo Post Punk and intermingle them with glitchy Noise. The rustling sonic experience is painted in dark colours and decorated with a mixture of chanting, shouting, and spoken word. This is the gloomy and post-apocalyptic sound of the late 80s and early 90s reborn with new power and immense energy. "Polaroid Malibu" is a hot recommendation for fans of doomy Post Punk, dark Noise or experimental bands like New Primals.
