After poet and writer Timothy Walsh took several years off from his second passion music, he is now back under the pseudonym of Penelope's Thrill. Founded in 2015, the band has released their debut album in 2021 which was recorded during the lockdown.
But this is not just a regular album of a writer of stories, tales, and poems who likes to play music as well. Timothy Walsh has united his passions and has hence created an impressive concept album - or rather a thrilling short story told via music. Think of GRIOT and you will get an idea of what we are talking about here.
"Twilight on Tunnel Road" is the tale of Lonnie and Chloe, both growing up in rural South Wisconsin. It is a story about coming of age, about getting to know one's own personality, traits, dreams and beliefs, and a story about change - but listen for yourselves; you won't regret.
Timothy Walsh is the main songwriter and lyricist at Penelope's Thrill, and he was responsible for vocals, bass, and guitars on "Twilight on Tunnel Road". Yet, there are several guuest musicians who helped make this sonic tale so colourful:
Ben Jaeger - tuba,
Wendy Lynn Staats - violin,
Akmaral Zykayeva - violin,
Ben Lokuta - drums,
Barabara Walsh - backing vocals, and
Amanda Kim Anderson - vocals.
Not only is "Twilight on Tunnel Road" a compelling story - it is also an amazing album. Penelope's Thrill merge the dynamic powers of Surf Rock, Rockabilly, and Americana, and finally there is a certain impact that derives from Timothy Walsh's recent stay in Kazakhstan. The soundscapes perfectly emphasize the story of the young couple finding their way between farmland, modern technology, and a mind full of hopes and dreams.
