Artist Introduction: Moan Barrow

Moan Barrow
is the brainchild of producer and multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones who
is also the sole member of the band. Whether Moan Barrow really is a proper
band or can rather be located to the fiction section of contemporary music
history, is a question that is neither easy nor necessary to answer. Moan
Barrow is Moan Barrow, and their music is a flagship for music production
enterprise Moan Barrow Productions.
On five
songs available for streaming so far, Brian Jones’ project presents
themselves in a gloomy and melancholically bittersweet way. Dark soundscapes of
Grunge and Post-Grunge create thrill and tension while the overall sound is
decorated with a certain Disco or New Wave addition here and there. Take “Been
here before” (video above) for example – a dynamical sonic déjà vu interpreted via
energetic Alternative Rock and a Sting-like chorus.
The latest
release “Ghost” (video above) might be the darkest song by Moan Barrow so far –
both content-wise as musically. On a distorted and fuzzy Retro Rock ambient,
the song deals with a person that dies alone without realizing it. Having
nobody around to inform them about their passing away, the protagonist thinks
they were still alive and seeing a ghost until finally realizing that they
themselves are that ghost now. The fantastic story about the transgression from
the world of the living to the next station is musicked via misty soundscapes,
and hence appears very authentic.
