'Fire int the Sky', the lastest single by London's Death of Death might be one of the most touching sounds I have heard in months. The song is about the terrible shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas, 2017. Single attacker Stephen Paddock killed at least 60 people and wounded over 400 innocents in the deadliest mass shooting in US history committed by an individual person. And as Death of Death present in their song, a vast amount of commentary following this cruel act of violence was about Paddock being a nice neighbour, a good person, or someone one would have never expected to do this. Living in Germany, I know that similar things were said about the terrorist who attacked the synagogue in Halle an der Saale, or about the person, or about the Hanau Shootings.
Talking about the content could fill books, and thus I want to focus on the music in the second part of this review. Bass player Ben Jasper, Vinny Piana on guitars, vocals and synths, and guest musician Baz Combes in drums provide us with tearjerking and deeply atmospheric Post Punk. The anthemic chorus invites to hug our neighbours, close our eyes, and join the chorals that combine consternation, fear, anger, sorrow, and the hope that love will win over fear. The gentle and heartwarming Alternative Rock and Post Punk theme of the verses is decorated by the sweet sounds of strings and pianos, and finally the song's coda lets the moving atmosphere climax.
Music from every post will stay in the MangoRotation playlist for 14 days.
