A debate on whether social media is more of a curse than a blessing or the other way around could fill whole seminars or series of publications. Regarding the problematic sides of this phenomenon alone opens a wide field of examples, aspects, and structures that make it easy that justify titles like 'Antisocial Media'. People absenting themselves from the real world is just one part of this. In their latest single, LA's Shiragirl take on this very part and its problematic traits. Being connected to a global sphere without truely participating in human contact is one of the major aspects of this. The potential of creeps and sexists who are taking advantage of this is another, or as vocalist Shira Yevin sings 'You don't have to like me to like my picture'.
Together with drummer Rainey P, bassist Alex Windsor, and guitarist Constance Antoinette, the artist has formed the band Shiragirl. Besides fronting this band, Shira Yevin is also very active in empowering female and non-binary artist. In early 2020 (pre-corona), she founded the platform Gritty in Pink which follows a similar mission as Berlin's Grrrl Noisy - both of them are worth checking out and supporting!
Shiragirl's critical and ironic take on social media culture is musicked via a colourful, melodic, and powerful style that combines the best of several decades of Riot Grrrl music. Dynamic Pop Punk comparable to Kill My Coquette clashes with moshpit-ready Punk Rock and the dark but moving atmosphere of Post-Grunge Alternative Rock. This is the perfect anthem to close your browser to (but maybe after leaving the band and my sites link?).
Music from every post will stay in the MangoRotation playlist for 14 days.
