Have you ever opened the door to a pub or to a venue, and right after entering the building you feel like you have just travelled through time? Sounds, lighting, atmosphere, and/or smell transport you to a space where time seems to either stand still or to move a lot slower than outside. This can happen when playing certain music, too. One example is Vvlva's 'Bar der Sünde', the B-Side from their single '13. Winter'. A more recent example is the album on hand, "The Qwarks are cancelled" by The Qwarks. The debut album contains thirteen songs, four phone call skits, and tons of fun. Thus, let us dive into the colourful world of Nick Flowers (drums), Simon Young (bass, mix and master), and Phil Johnstone (guitars, vocals, songwriting).
Staying with the comparison of the pub door that appears to be the portal to a timeless sphere, the album can be described by a stroll through such a place. Introducingly, 'Lizard People' leaves no room for explanation, and instead remorselessly confronts the audience with the beautifully weird reality they have entered by pressing that play button. Interrupted by the four phone calls by Jeannie, the album feels like exploring that strange and exciting place. You may see some Frank Zappa vinyl records hanging on the walls next to handsigned poster of Siouxsie and the Banshees. You may encounter a middle-aged punk rocker wearing a vest decorated by patches from Black Flag or Crass, and spot a young goth raising their glass at you revealing a Sisters of Mercy shirt. After several shots and pints, after dancing on the tile table, and after losing a match of foosball against the residents, you will find yourself back home, asking yourself whether this was real or the most beautiful dream.
It most certainly was real. Press repeat an you will find out.
The Qwarks play a highly entertaining and deeply thrilling mix of Psych, Prog, Garage, Punk, and Post Punk. Zappaesque insanity meets proggy arts, and enters a wild moshpit after consuming psychedelic drugs. Let the time stand still for a little more, and play this album once more. And please do not cancel The Qwarks!
Music from every post will stay in the MangoRotation playlist for 14 days.
