Origin: Kouvola, Finland

Kouvola is an 80,000-residents-town in southern Finland. The town got rewarded for its impressive industrial buildings which are UNESCO world heritage. Apart from its industrial charme, the town is known for being home to several ice hockey players, ski jumpers, and musicians. Amongst the latter, Joni Kyyräräinen is the one, I want to introduce to you today. The multi-instrumentalist has formed his latest solo project Somber Distortion in the cold winter of late 2020. The first EP "Primitive Skills" will be out later in 2021. To dive into the fuzzy and cold sound produced by Joni Kyynäräinen, let us have a listen to debut single 'Burden' - first of six from the upcoming EP.

A bass line as cold as a Northern blizzard opens the song accompanied by smoothly whispered vocals and a warming guitar that reminds of the gorgeous flickering of the Northern Lights. As Kyynäräinen shouts 'Can you even remember', the fuzzy and sonorous theme of 'Burden' kicks in. Distorted and warmly, the guitar riffs lead the audience through this massively rolling Grunge and Garage Rock tune while the vocals increase in intensity and presence over time. Towards the end of this sonic journey, backing chorals and the powerfully shouted vocals finish this great song that is as paralyzing and as beautiful as the Northern countryside. What a debut!
