Maxwell Jeffries, also known as Underking is back with his third full-length album "At Hell's Gate". The artist from Nottingham hence ties on to his recent EP "Red Sun Rises". On nine songs and a bonus track, Underking demonstrates a very modern and progressive form of Heavy Metal. The sound is versatile, intense, and yet very melodic. And still, the epic soundscapes show parallels to the battle hymns of 80s NWoBHM - the song 'Red Sun Rises' especially is the perfect soundtrack for riding into battle to.
"At Hell's Gate" is a beautiful album for fans of Science Fiction and Fantasy literature (or film). Atmospheric soundscapes are presented with intelligent structures and up-tempo riffing. Underking's "At Hell's Gate" proves that Heavy Metal is still very active, and that the genre stil has a lot of unexploited potential. Instead of producing the umpteenth copy of "Power Slave", Underking brings the genre to a whole new level. Far away from sleepy AOR or pathetic attempts of sounding symphonic, this albums takes a new line between Heavy and Prog.

The golden thread of the album is stunning, and thus "At Hell's Gate" ends with the big finale 'No Mercy' featuring Charlotte Corry and Two Eyes Open - this is what Symphonic Metal should sound like. And then there's the bonus track, 'Halloween', originally written by the Misfits - a worthy cover version of the classic.
