Stephen EvEns' "I hate Shop (I am Shop)" is featured on the London-based artist's latest album "Employee of the Month" (August 2020, Onophonic). The song is a sober and honest anthem for everyone who works in 9-5 jobs. It is a song about people who hate being stuck in an employment that does not fulfill them, but on the other hand is their neccessary source of income. Aw yeah, good old capitalism. Cynically, Stephen EvEns describes a life dependent on working hours and pay cheques.


"I hate Shop" is a crisp Garage Rock banger. Guitar riffs dry as a bone stomp through the crunchy sonic landscape as Stephen EvEns tells about everyday life of an employee of the month. While the verses are influenced by a darkish 80s-Post Punk air, the anthemic chorus rather goes towards Indie Rock. Joined by backing vocals, the chorus has a certain Art Brut vibe.
"I hate Shop" is a crunchy Garage Rock / Post Punk / Indie Rock propounded via dark British humour and energetically stomping movement. This might be a great tune to listen to on your way to work - if you're cynical enough. Otherwise, it also fits the way back home.
