Reinaldo Santos (guitar, vocals), Xhavier Velasquez (guitar, vocals), Fabrizio Pinto (drums), and David Moreno (bass) are REC Syndrome. The quartet is based in the Catalan towns Barcelona and Sitges. Currently, REC Syndrome are working on their third full-length album which will be out some time in the near future.
The ex ante single "Mascarilla" (Spanish: "Face Mask") will be featured on the new album, and the song is a powerful summary of the happenings of the last year. My knowledge of Romance languages is very limited, and thus I don't even know whether REC Syndrome sing in Castellano, Catalán, or another tongue spoken in North East Spain. What I can get from the lyrics is that the lockdowns are dealt with, as well as the murder of George Floyd, and the recent riots in Barcelona and other Catalan cities.
On "Mascarilla", REC Syndrome combine the heaviness of contemporary Stoner Rock with the dark ambient atmosphere of Cold War-era Post Punk. The result is a powerful and dystopian sound that conveys both, desolation and hope. With the dynamic chorus and a certain influence that I would call Iberian Rock, "Mascarilla" becomes an intense and energetic anthem.
