"Consolamentum" is not only the fifth full-length release by Bordeaux' Post Metal giants Year Of No Light. With this album, the band also celebrates their 20th anniversary. And therefore, a special bundle is available in the webshop of German label Pelagic Records. The wooden box contains all five studio albums, several Split EPs, a recording from the Roadburn Festival together with composer Dirk Serries, and several other goodies. You can either get a CD bundle or a vinyl bundle.
With "Consolamentum", Year Of No Light prove once more that they belong to the crème de la crème of heavy and atmospheric music. Masterfully, the band merges coldly waving Drone sounds with the vast atmosphere of Post Metal and the massive brachiality of Sludge.
The five tracks construct an amazing arc of suspense that makes "Consolamentum" a wholesome auditive experience that sounds best when played from beginning to end. Feel free to activate the repeat button.
Although it is a common theme in Post Rock and Post Metal, it is impressive how the soundscapes on Year Of No Light's fifth full-length work remind powerful forces of nature. With one's eyes closed, one can imagine phenomenous oceanic waves, savage thunderstorms, icy blizzards, or the freezing calm of underwater spheres.
My personal recommendation is, to play this record within a session that also includes Noorvik's "Omission", and Six Days of Calm's "The Ocean's Lullaby". With "Consolamentum", Year Of No Light" have created another monument of brachial and ambient instrumental music.
